I have an iMac 27-inch, Late 2009 running OS X 10.8.2 (12C54) but I do not have the Airplay mirroring option in the menu bar. Is it that my iMac does not support Airplay>

Yes, you need early 2011 or later to use mirror (mid 2011 for MB air). You can get round it with an app called airparrot for about 10 bucks, airparrot.com, worth a look at their site.
