Q: ipod classic doesnt play

My 80gb ipod Classic wont play.  The music syncs with my itunes and it all appears to be there, but when I click on a song to play it, nothing plays.  I hear a small (only can hear it of you put your ear to it) high pitched whirring and ping sound as if its trying to do something and keeps repeating the process. Any ideas how I can get past this?

I've tried restoring it and I get a 1413 eror message.  I've tried installing the new versions of ITunes and we're all up to date.
