I'm sure there is some convoluted way to do this, but there is an even better way to go. With a Finder window open and the toolbar showing, go to Customize Toolbar in the View menu and add Delete. Now you don't have to drag anything anywhere (and risk accidently dropping it somewhere along the way). When you get to something you want gone just select it and click the Delete function in the Toolbar. It will be moved to the Trash.

Between these two suggestions, it's pretty workable. Unfortunately though, the full functionality of the docking station trash folder (including ejecting media) can't really be reproduced in the sidebar... 😟
