iPhone Overheating

An app which is constantly using the CPU or graphics processor will cause the phone to get hot. 3D games can do that. If you are doing turn-by-turn directions it can make the phone warm. But, if you are not running any apps and the phone is warm while it's idle is an indication some process is running in the background, and is probably hung in a loop. It shouldn't happen. It's hard to track down.

Restart your phone (hold down Sleep/Wake, then Slide to power off, then turn back on). Without using any apps, see if the phone gets warm. Try to see which app is causing it.

You can always tell when the GPS is in use as you will see the little compass indicator in the status bar to the right of the time display. When you're at the home screen, the indicator should not be displayed for longer than 10 seconds or so.

If it's on constantly and you're not in the middle of getting turn-by-turn directions, from Home go to:

Settings>Privacy>Location Services

Look for a purple indicator, which tells which app is using it right now.
