Why won't itunes let me select specific songs and playlists to sync to my iphone?

When I plug my iphone into itunes and select the music tab to sync music, the screen is greyed out. If I check sync music, I am not given the option to select specific playlists or songs. I get a pop up menu that tells me all my music will sync and to select continue or cancel. So it's all or nothing. I just want to sync the playlist I created for my phone. I had this problem with the iphone 4S. I just get the iphone 5 and hoped it would go away once I registered the new phone. I also made sure itunes is updated to the newest version. Can anyone help?

"WIth iTunes 10, when automatically syncing, you can also manually drag items to the iDevice.
