iphone hotspot secure?

I'm out of town and only have access to "open" wifi at hotel. I'm wondering if I use my Verizon iPhone 5 "hotspot" if that would be a secure connection to do banking, purchases, etc. online?

I find that all I have to do is turn on the hotspot on the iphone, then plug into the USB port and I have an automatic online connection. Or I can select "wifi" in the phone's Hotspot setup, and use wifi to connect ot the internet. Which is preferred from a security standpoint?

I ask this again as there have been no replies--

I need a secure connection to internet for banking, other financial actions. If I plug my iPhone 5 into the USB port on my laptop, then turn on the Hotspot and connect only with the Bluetooth/USB option (not wifi), would this be a secure connection that no one could see other than myself?

Thanks for the help.
