I plug my ipad in the imac and it will not charge.iPhoto and iTunes come up but can't access ipad and its not charging.
I can plug it into the wall and it works. Also, it keeps crashing in a lot of apps. I thought that it was low battery but it did on a full battery charge as well.

Pluged in the high speed connection. Its an ipad 1. Is it possible the software is overloading the mechanical. But
it worked last week after the upgrade. It is also crashing in safari and other apps. Still will not charge on the imac. I got a new hard drive. I will unplug that and see what happens. Excuse me. I have to go play to run down the battery a bit

I found the same thing with my iPad 3. Would say "Not Charging" when plugged into my keyboard USB port.
Same thing when I tried a different USB hub.
SOLUTION: Use only the USB ports at the rear of your iMac and it works fine. Took me a while to work this one out, but it's going gangbusters now! 🙂
The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.

It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. In rare instances when using the Camera Connection Kit, you may notice that iPad does not charge after using the Camera Connection Kit. Disconnecting and reconnecting the iPad from the charger will resolve this issue.

I was using an extention to the power cord and it use to charge. So I read your instuctions and plugged it directly into the back of the iMac. It worked. Its awkward to plug it in on the short cord but I will use it for updates and plug it into the wall for the battery charge. Thank you for your help.

Tom this was the ticket for me... my iMac was sleeping! Once I logged on to my profile it started charging and updating and backing up and all the wonderful things I have come to expect!! 😀
