I am working on bonding with my new iPhone5 (former Blackberry user...for over 10 years!). I cannot send text messages to or receive text messages from friends/family who have Android phones. Any secrets to sending and receiving text messages on iPhone5?😕 Help!

check your settings-phone-my number is your mobile number starting +44 instead of 0 🙂
Go to Settings > Messages and make sure "Send as SMS" is set to "On".
If you would like to send and receive photos in messages, set "MMS Messaging" on also.
Trust me, you'll enjoy your iPhone a whole lot better than your Blackberry!

Thanks for your reply Kirstey...my number is listed with a +1; should it be shown differently. I have no problems with text messages to other iPhone users (of course)....however, my folks are divided between the Android and the iPhone communities and I need to be able to get to them all!

Thanks sberman...the settings are as you indicated...still not able to send and receive to/from Androids....yikes! My son has an Android and he is my test and still nothing...any other ideas? PS. l'm already enjoying the my iPhone better than the Blackberry, particularly the web access!!
Are you able to make/receive phone calls?
When you say "not able to send/receive", what happens when you try to send an SMS? Do you get a Failed message back?
What happens when they try to send to you?
Look at Settings > Messages > Send and Receive. Is your phone number shown correctly in this form:
+1 (999) 987-6543
... both on the "Start new conversations from" and the "You can be reached by iMessage at:" lines?
Check with your carrier and make sure that your account is properly provisioned for text messaging. Even if it was before you changed over, things could have gotten messed up when you changed phones.
well from what i found out with my iphone 5, if you have a failed message, it in a way sits in the outbox clogging up all following messages... here is my story with what i learned, at first i was so irritated, but now it kindof makes sense.
bought new iphone 5, hour after activated, i texted my best friend first with it. for some reason text message failed, i didnt know this though, just thought he didnt reply. about 4 hours later i texted other people and they got my messages just fine and replied just fine.... all up until today that one friend could never get my messages, we tested and tested and tested sitting next to eachother and everything. it boiled down to he could text me, but when i replied he would get nothing. then we both would be confused, him because i didnt answer his question, me because he wasnt replying to my answer lol.
what happened was that first message that failed, prevented all of my other messages from going through, they would show sent and would look like they went out, but wouldnt actually go throught, this did not stop his text meassages from getting to me, just one way... what i actually did was went to messages hit edit, and deleted the entire thread i had with him. after doing this it allowed my messages to go through just fine.
i realized this last night when i was in mid conversation with someone, sent them 3 pictures and noticed only one went through, it was pretty much at that point where they stopped getting my messages and after a few more messages i could tell, they actually were not getting my messages, i called them, sure enough it happened again.... not sure why it does this, but chalk it up to another iphone failure lol. maybe with an update messaging will be fixed.

I am able to receive texts on the iphone 5, but a few of my contacts are not receiving any texts from me. It looks as if it is delivered, but never shows up to the person that I sent it to. I have tried deleting all of the texts with this person and then starting a new texting thread but that didn't help any. These contacts don't have an iphone. Any suggestions???
If youre using 3g not 4g first turn off lte in your cellular, network or mobile data settings! Check your number is correct in settings-phone-mynumber then go to settings messages- imessage off, then turn it back on. This will update your send an receive address!
This is happening to me to one contact for sure on Sprint. He hasn't gotten messages from me in days. I can receive his though. I've been reading forums and seems this is happening to a lot of iPhone 5 users. I sure hope they have a fix soon. I've deleted the contact, reset network settings, AT&T reset my network settings, they removed me from the AT&T network and then readded me. I've hard reset my phone. Nothing is working.
I had the same problem - some of my contacts stopped receiving my texts.
This worked. Go to settings-messages-Send&Receive and ensure your # is listed in this format:
+1(603)555-1212
Then go to the contact - text thread were they are not receiving your texts and delete all of them.
Then go to that contact and edit their so it also appears as:
+1(603)555-2121
It resolved all 4 of my text issues (at least for now). FYI - apple support and verizon support were usesell except for these forums - where I tried differnt things. For a $500 iphone they should do a bit better.........miss my Blackberry
