Private Airplane Question
When flying in a private airplane can I use the iPhone5 GPS just as I would, for example, a Garmin GPS? I haven't bought a smartphone yet.

Sure, but if you intend to use the built in Maps app, that requires a data connection...either cellular or WiFi. Otherwise, you'll need a navigation app that stores the data locally on your phone.
