ipad won't connect to itunes

My mom's ipad for some reason won't connect to iTunes. It will connect to iPhoto, but she needs to upgrade the iOS but is unable to because it will not connect to iTunes. Any suggestions? We tried rebooting the computer, shutting down the computer, rebooting the ipad and nothing is working. The latest version of itunes is downloaded on her computer too.
