What are some tips to avoid for preserving macbook life?

What are some important steps to take to ensure a long-lasting macbook pro or macbook, based on performance?

1) How much (fraction/percentage) of the computer's total RAM constitutes a "safety zone" (i.e. a serious wear on the hard drive and lcd screen)

2) Should certain applications be avoided on certain macbook pro models to reduce/minimize the wear and tear on the system?

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

Avoid anti-virus programs, especially MacKeeper. Most of them muck up your system.

RAM is used as seen necessary by OSX. The indicator of needing more RAM is usually when Finder>Applications>Utilities>ActivityMonitor shows Pageouts are more than 10% of PageIns ... see mine below:

You should keep 15% of your HD free .... OSX needs some "play room" to perform routine tasks.

Battery maintnance is one area new people fall over. You should NEVER run your battery dead as that will shorten its life considerably. You CAN leave it plugged in most of the time as long as you run it on battery at least once a month down to 40% then recharge it.

Active Anti-Virus like Norton tend to interfere more than help. MacKeeper should be avoided at all costs.

Try to avoid "virus infested" websites. If if the virus you pick up is for PCs an does not activate in OSX, it can be passed through e-mails to PC users.

there are some obvious things which may not be obvious to everyone. don't spill anything on it. don't use it on a blanket with the air vents plugged up on the bottom. don't put in any cd's with peanut butter on them. if you do spill something on it remove battery quickly. open it up, turn upside down and let it dry out for a couple of days before trying to use again.
