My computer has recently been so slow that it takes 10 minutes to come up and then freezes so I have to begin again. My system is Mac OSX 10.5.8. What is the cause and how can I remedy this problem?

See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...

Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab, are there a lot of Pageouts?
Thanks for your ideas but I could not even find the screen illustrated above for CPU--pageouts etc. I found Activity Monito on a screen listing many items from A to Z but nothing opened. It only showed when the program was set up. What do I do now?
