Sep 6, 2013 7:28 AM in response to mssweeneby King_Penguin,I've just tried it by following the instructions on that page and I've been able to create a new account with the 'none' option and have downloaded a free app.
e.g. on my computer's iTunes I logged out of existing account, found a free app in the store and clicked on its free 'price' :
I then clicked on 'create Apple id' on the popup :
I agreed to the terms, filled in my details and on the payment's screen I got :
I then got the verification email, clicked on it, logged into that new account, and downloaded a free app.
Are they the steps that you followed when creating the account ?

Jan 4, 2014 12:36 AM in response to mirlpopowichby King_Penguin,You need to folow, exactly, those instructions when creating an account (the instructions won't work with existint accounts) - I've just tried them again and I get the 'none' option. You used those steps when creating it ?

Jan 20, 2014 3:59 PM in response to King_Penguinby mirlpopowich,No, I was using my wife's account and this was causing problems, so I took the thing into the Apple store. They set it up. So whatever they did, they didn't ask for credit card. I don't even know how they bypassed this issue.

Jan 21, 2014 11:55 AM in response to King_Penguinby mirlpopowich,They set up the account in the Apple store with no credit card in a way that excludes the "NONE" button. That's my whole problem. Now I can't change it. That's what I've been saying.

Jan 21, 2014 12:00 PM in response to mirlpopowichby King_Penguin,You will either need to enter your credit card details (you should then be able to remove them) or create a new account - unless those instructions are used when creating an account then credit card details will need to be entered before the account can be used in the stores.

Jan 21, 2014 1:54 PM in response to King_Penguinby mirlpopowich,I can't enter credit card details because I don't have one. That's why I was using my wife's account - she has a credit card. But I can't use her Apple account on my phone because they don't "talk to each other." When I was syncing my iPhone to her account it comes up with all her details on my phone. I can't enter a credit card with someone else's name on it to set up the account, even temporarily.

Feb 10, 2015 5:26 AM in response to King_Penguinby petterpublicname,is this some form of hack to get around a bug in their system? why don't they fix it instead?
-
Feb 10, 2015 5:43 AM in response to petterpublicnameby King_Penguin,No, it's not 'some sort of hack to get around a bug', what I linked to are Apple's own instructions for how to create a new account without giving credit card details. What do you think needs fixing ?
