Is it possible to make a iTunes account without a Credit Card?
iPod touch, iOS 6, 8G
Try following the instructions on this page : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2534 - i.e. select a free app and create an account when 'buying' it
There is no "none" button
I've just tried it by following the instructions on that page and I've been able to create a new account with the 'none' option and have downloaded a free app.
e.g. on my computer's iTunes I logged out of existing account, found a free app in the store and clicked on its free 'price' :
I then clicked on 'create Apple id' on the popup :
I agreed to the terms, filled in my details and on the payment's screen I got :
I then got the verification email, clicked on it, logged into that new account, and downloaded a free app.
Are they the steps that you followed when creating the account ?
This doesn't work for me. I don't get the "none" option.
You need to folow, exactly, those instructions when creating an account (the instructions won't work with existint accounts) - I've just tried them again and I get the 'none' option. You used those steps when creating it ?
No, I was using my wife's account and this was causing problems, so I took the thing into the Apple store. They set it up. So whatever they did, they didn't ask for credit card. I don't even know how they bypassed this issue.
Bypassed what issue ? Are you having a problem with your account ?
They set up the account in the Apple store with no credit card in a way that excludes the "NONE" button. That's my whole problem. Now I can't change it. That's what I've been saying.
You will either need to enter your credit card details (you should then be able to remove them) or create a new account - unless those instructions are used when creating an account then credit card details will need to be entered before the account can be used in the stores.
I can't enter credit card details because I don't have one. That's why I was using my wife's account - she has a credit card. But I can't use her Apple account on my phone because they don't "talk to each other." When I was syncing my iPhone to her account it comes up with all her details on my phone. I can't enter a credit card with someone else's name on it to set up the account, even temporarily.
Have you ever used your account to download anything from the store ? If not then why can't you create a new account by following those instructions and use thatinstead ?
is this some form of hack to get around a bug in their system? why don't they fix it instead?
No, it's not 'some sort of hack to get around a bug', what I linked to are Apple's own instructions for how to create a new account without giving credit card details. What do you think needs fixing ?
the fact that i need to download some random free app sure seems like a hack to me. I understand the instructions are from apple, doesn't make them less of a hack. Why would a reasonable system need you to download a random free application just to be able to complete your registration without a credit card?? This is the issue that needs fixing, the credit card info should obviously only be needed if you are actually buying something, not for downloading free apps or getting free updates.
Cheers,
Petter
