Scrolling - see where you are without scrolling or always showing scroll bars

Is there a way to see where I am in a document without scrolling or setting the scroll bars to always show?

Having to scroll down or up a little and then back in the opposite direction just to see where you are seems to be the only way to do it without setting the scroll bars to always show. I know I could turn the scroll bars to always on, but I was curious if there was a way to do this without having them always show. I thought maybe just tapping the touchpad with two fingers might be a nice way to do it, but that doesn't seem to work.
