Pop-up mail notifications

Uasually when I turn on my iPad or Iphone, I get a quick pop-up for each email which I have recieved since the last time I opened the device. While I do plan on checking m email, I find these pop-up anoying. Can I turn off these pop-ups without turnine any email accounts?
