Archive Utility has stopped working

Hi Folks,

Any idea how to reinstall this program? It hass topped working - I double-click on a .zip,for example, and Archive Utility opens up - but just hangs in what appears to be a state of starting the decompression process. Force Quit is my only option. I'd like to get this working (and not replace it with something else). Is there a preference file or something that can be tossed? Can I reinstall it?

The "appleeventsd" fix worked for me, too. Thank you! We'll see if it "holds" or if it's a recurring problem, I only just undertook the fix.

Just tried force killing "appleeventsd" and Archive Utility ran okay again.

Happened again. How can such a basic functionaity issue not be noticed by Apple?

Upenn's fix worked for me: kill process appleeventsd, achive utility functions. Nothing else worked. Thanks!

Sadly, I have the same problem. There is no appleeventsd in ActivityMonitor, don't know how to fix the problem. Very hard to use the system without possibility to open archives 😟

You probably didn't choose "All processes" from the dropdown list to the left of the filter field.

Until it happens again.

A reboot alone will fix it since you quit and restart the appleeventsd process.

I've also found that rerunning the combo updater fixes the problem, although never permanently. Happens on both iMac and MacBook Pro running 10.8.2
