Archive Utility has stopped working

My Archive Utility was hanging every time I clicked on a zipped file. What fixed it was...

1. restoring Archive Utility from Time Machine using a date prior to when the problem occured.

2. Using Disk Utility to Repair Permissions

3. Restaring.

All fixed now.

Sadly, I have the same problem. There is no appleeventsd in ActivityMonitor, don't know how to fix the problem. Very hard to use the system without possibility to open archives 😟

You probably didn't choose "All processes" from the dropdown list to the left of the filter field.

This is great. Not only did this fix the Archive Utility issue it also fixed an issue with Spotlight where the CMD+click on a spotlight result wouldn't open the enclosing folder anymore.

Once I killed appleventsd the spotlight issue was fixed too.

Does this fix survives a reboot?

A reboot alone will fix it since you quit and restart the appleeventsd process.

I've also found that rerunning the combo updater fixes the problem, although never permanently. Happens on both iMac and MacBook Pro running 10.8.2

Had same problem listed here (Archive Utility just hangs on various archives). Reboot would fix (restarts appleeventsd), but that's disruptive:

1) Run Terminal from the Applications -> Utilities folder

2) Type: sudo kill -9 $(pgrep appleeventsd)

3) Enter admin password

4) Fixed.

Hope this helps. I like it better than dealing with Activity Monitor and remembering to show all.

That fixed the problem.

Worked for me! Force quitting appleeventsd solved the problem. (No combination of permissions repair nor removing .plist and .plist.lockfile files worked.)

I moved over to Mountain Lion from Lion about 6 weeks ago.

It seems to me that this is just another in an ever increasing list of issues with Apple software which is not just limited to MAC OSX. I'm experiencing other issues with iOS6 on iPad and iPhone platforms.

Disappointing that Apple have let things slide so much accross all platforms.
