Shuffle on iOS 6 - partial fail

I always use shuffle at work, listening to my songs in whatever order they play. In iOS 5 this worked perfectly fine. In iOS 6, I definitely have an issue. If the Music app is closed, instead of playing the "next" random song, it goes back to a previously played random song and resumes from there.


So, for instance, I'm listening and it plays randomly selected tracks 1 through 10, like:


1 -> 2 -> 3 -> 4 -> 5 -> 6 -> 7 -> 8 -> 9 -> 10


Then then next time I start to shuffle, it would start at some track in the middle and "resume", like:


6 -> 7 -> 8 -> 9 -> 10 -> 11 -> 12 ...


So there is definitely something weird going on. The Music app is losing track, no pun intended, of where it last left off. It then goes on and hits the exact same "randomly" chosen tracks again.

It's not only with shuffle. If I listen to a few tracks of an album on my iphone 5, if I close the music player at any point, it won't resume where I left off. It "forgets" and will play the album from the very beginning of the album. Very annoying.

I have the same exact problem, quite annoying (iOS 6 on iPhone 5)


it's not when i close the music app, it happens when the phone has been idle for a few hours (haven't figured out exactly how long yet) so if i go back to the music app after 30 minutes, it picks up where i left it, but if i go back after 4 hours, it starts from the top again


after talking to an Apple store tech, he advised me to reset and erase everything and restore, which didn't help at all


my experience is that it's not just limited to the music app either, all apps will start fresh after sitting idle for a few hours and won't remember where i left them, iBooks was doing the same thing (forgetting where in the book i left off) but the restore seems to have fixed that one

I have this problem too. It started with ios6 and it's driving me crazy! I listen to music on shuffle every day but with this issue I am seriously annoyed. Also, for the first 3 days after the update, for some reason I couldn't play anything through the AUX. I thought maybe it was the cable, but it would have been too much of a coincidence.

Heidern, I'm experiencing the same glitch, and you explained it more clearly than I've been able to!


I usually listen to shuffle on my commute, starting when I leave my apartment until I arrive at my office, and then when I leave my office on the way home. Shuffle used to pick up wherever I left off, not only on the same track, but at the same point within the track. Now, when I leave work at the end of the day, instead of playing the track I was listening to when I arrived at the office, shuffle starts up on the track that was playing when I first left my apartment.


To continue wherever I left off, I either have to flip forward through the shuffle sequence I've already heard until I get back to that most recent stopping point and proceed from there, or go back to the menu and tap "Shuffle" again to start a whole new sequence.


If I pause briefly mid-commute, the track order doesn't reset back to the beginning—it must take a longer pause to reset, but I haven't been able to pinpoint the length of time yet.


This is more than a partial fail! This glitch interrupts the flow of shuffle, all but defeating the purpose!

i was having the same exact problem, start a playlist in the morning, stop it when i got to work and restart at lunch time and the playlist would start where it started in the morning commute


interestingly enough it has gone away now, i waited 5 days to make sure that it is gone before talking about it here, it may be that i got lucky, I drained my iphone, let the battery run to 0, let the phone shut down and recharge to 100%


i also bought some more songs since then (although i don't know if that has anything to do with this)


and now the music app is behaving
