After starting up, my internal loudspeakers are dumb. External USB loudspeakers work.
The volume setting is crossed out Ø. No red light in the headphone socket.
I have no idea what happened.
Any help is much appreciated.
It's still getting weirder: When I switch to Sound Input, I get this: http://tinyurl.com/8s7efaj !
Looks like it is the Soundflower.
Uninstalling Soundflower using the uninstaller may help.
I have developed the same exact problem on my 2 year old MacBook Pro. The mute box in the audio panel in system preferences is checked, but greyed out and cannot be unchecked.
What is the "Soundflower?"
Thank you! It *was* Soundflower. No idea how it had been installed.
It usually comes with video/audio capturing and remote speaker applications
It will change the normal sound settings.
I cannot find soundflower anywhere in my MacBook.
The problem seems to be the selection of "mute" in Sound System Preferences. That part of the panel is greyed out and can't be deselected. See attached image.
I followed the advice by
Carolyn Samit San Francisco Bay Area / Hawaii and moved audio and system preferences plists to the trash, then rebooted and it fixed the problem
