I have a 13 inch air that I connected to my LG HDTV using a minidisplay port to hdmi adapter. The default space background that comes on macs comes up on my tv but that's not the background on my Mac nor does any icons or anything else show up. Is there a setting that needs to be changed or what? Very confused and frustrated

Within the Displays preference pane in System Preferences is a choice whther to extend your desktop, or mirror your desktop. Apparently, the current selection is to "extend the desktop".
Set the preference to "mirror the desktop", so that your internal display shows the same image as your external display.
I don't have that option the only thing it shows is the resolution and the brightness
