error 0ex - iPhone 5 not recognised

My new iPHone 5 is not being recognised by iTunes. The PC does however recognise the phone, and it shows up as a device and I can open it to see the files it contains (but it is not showing on iTunes). I have uninstalled, reinstalled, restarted, and generally followed all the advice I've seen on 0EX errors. ANyone have any thoughts? I am running WIndows 7 64 (and yes I have the correct iTunes installed).

PC, Windows 7, ...

By way of experiment, when iTunes is not recognising the phone, let's try a "run as administrator".

Quit iTunes first.

In Computer, open Local Disk C: or whichever drive you have your program files installed on.

If you have a 32-bit Windows, open the "Program files" folder.

If you have a 64-bit Windows, open the "Program Files (x86)" folder.

Open the "iTunes" folder.

Right-click on the iTunes.exe file and select "run as administrator".

Connect the phone. Do you get recognition now?

Hmmm. H61 chipset, so not likely to be the old issue with the Intel 5 series chipsets (like the P55 and PM55) that threw the 0xE0000065 at people in the early days of Windows 7.

... but I guess we'd better check just in case.

Head to the downloads page for your Motherboard model at Asrock and check to see if your BIOS and chipset drivers are up to date.

If you're behind on anything, and you update, does that help with the 0xEs?

What's the specific error message? When I got "itunes could not connect to this iphone an unknown error occurred 0xe8000084" this worked for me:

Leave your iPhone connected to your PC then:

  1. Quit iTunes
  2. In task manager click "show processes from all users", sort by description and kill everything "Apple". Also kill the process with the image name AppleMobileDeviceHelper.exe
  3. Click Start > Run > in the Open text box copy & paste the following - with the quotes - "%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\AppleMobileDeviceHelper.exe" and press OK.
  4. Open iTunes
