My wife's Mac Book Pro won't start up! what is the issue

Just recently my wifes Mac Book Pro that we bought at the end of last summer wont start up, it tries to but stops responding. Sometimes you can get to the password entry screen but after you put in the password it no longer responds and stays on the loading screen
