I have tried to download a java operating system, but I'm a novice. We've got an iPad 2 for our class, and I'm trying to access the school system's grade program from home.

Welcome to the world according to Steve Jobs. Java has been deliberately excluded from the iPad. Oracle is working on a fix. Wait one year.
Wait one year? What will happen?
Java will never be available on the iPad and is basically dead on mobile platforms. It's use is pretty much restricted to server-side applications these days.
