can "pooch" be installed on your computer by a rogue network?

I'm a newbee to Apple. My M$ devices were compromised by a hacker. My son gave me an older emac, which somehow acquired "pooch" on it when my other M$ stuff was infected from my compromised network. I found a pooch log in the user file indicating other nodes were installed. Can the configuration be changed to remove this? I don't go online with M$ anymore and am using other than M$ devices to go online. I'm afraid to go online with the old emac.

Thanks.
