The steps necessary to convert a song I purchased into a ringtone are RIDICULOUS!!!

Why do I need to reinvent the wheel to accomplish this?

Steve Jobs is doing 360s in his grave...

    Hi-

I tried all of this (following the instructions closely), and not only ruined the copy of my song- which won't play any more than 21 seconds, my copy on icloud is now 3 seconds long as well, and even when I tried it on itunes, where I originally purchased the song, the song is only 3 seconds long! AND I don't have it as a ring tone as it hasn't synched to the iphone...

    HELP!

    Dear,

    • if possible than tell me the exact process you have gone through..

as  of now what i can say is ..when you right click the desired song and  click on the option GET INFO...  IN GET INFO there is a category named  by OPTION , in there we change the timings of the song to 30 sec it  should be in the format as written ( where it should end). ...

follow  all the remaining steps ...  One more thing to remember is do not  forget to go to the original song again ......again go to the same  options just remove all the timings of the song ..click any where in the  screen..it will automatically come to its original timing....then close the box
other wise the song will be there of 5 minutes but will play only for 30 seconds..

the other song will be of 30 seconds but you need to change its format ...as said by me and various people

I'm having this same problem.  Were you able to figure it out?

Using iTunes 11.1.126, I select the song, enter the 30-second start and end times, click OK, right click to create the AAC file and it gives me an error that tells me it can't convert a protected file to another format. However, when I check the song's info, it is an m4p file and I downloaded it from itunes.  Anyone know how to fix this?

Try to download again the song from iTunes Store. Looks like the file was protected when you purchase it. Is an old purchase? I think now there are not protected files in iTunes Store. Maybe if you download again the song will get an unprotected file. I'm not sure but you can try.

First create the AAC file than go for the time conversion of the aac version song.

I read and tried EVERYTHING on the internet to make a ringtione from my media library and nothing worked, did my head in everytime. So I turned to Apps and tried a few that were rubbish, but when used this one and followed it's instructions it worked easily.

For everyone who is angry and frustrated that nothing works, give this a go. If you can handle the ads, it's free and so, so simple.

    Hope this helps!

i've been an android person for quite some time and was hesitant to get an iphone.  i finally got one yesterday...i got an iphone 5c.  i love it...i followed the instructions exactly and now have personal ringtones on my new phone.  I did not lose any songs so others must be doing something wrong.  thanks shackett01 for the instructions.

I keep getting to the part where you change the length of your song, but when I hit "Ok" it reverts back to its origional song length. Got any ideas on how to fix that??

Alright, so I'm not really sure if someone already answered this problem of not being able to convert the file by merely renaming it or not (I wasn't really feeling reading through and entire 8 pages), but I was having the same issue as you and was getting very frustrated as to why I couldn't change the file.

I kept searching for the answer in Google and ended up on some random help page but I have figure out why we were not able to.

The issue was that the file extension was not being shown in the file name, so when we added the .m4r it didn't register as an extension. To fix this problem:

    1. Go to control panel

    2. select appearance

    3. select folder options

    4. click on the view tab

    5. uncheck the "hide file extensions option" (you may have to scroll a little to find this)

Once you have done that then go back and rename the file and it should work (it did for me). Hopefully this fixes the problem!

P.S. I have windows 8, but it should be essentially the same steps for other windows versions.
