Using iTunes 11.0.2.26, I select the song, enter the 30-second start and end times, click OK, right click to create the AAC file and it gives me an error that tells me it can't convert a protected file to another format. However, when I check the song's info, it is an AAC file, so I don't understand how to get past this. Is this because I'm selecting a song that I imported to iTunes from a CD?

Maybe you was imported the cd with an old version of iTunes and you was using DRM.

    Import the CD again.

I had this same issue. I then found out that i had to go to folder properties on my actual computer not itunes and uncheck mark the box under view -  hide extensions.   then it shows the extensions and you can remove the m4a part and put m4r .  whats happening is that the extensions are hidden so it keeps the same one and renames it with both but the m4a at the end. keeping it a m4a extension. once you uncheck mark the box you will see the whole thing and can delete or rename it so its .m4r only. good luck!

cheonweb, I followed your instructions and found the reason the ringtone was not appearing on my iPhone was because I had not checked "Sync Tones" in the device menu in iTunes. When I did that, I was asked to erase my library and resync to this new library. When I clicked Yes, the ringtone appeared on my iPhone but all my music was removed.

How do I add all my music back onto my iPhone? I have tried resyncing but it must be syncing to a different library now that only contains just the one ringtone? I don't know...

    Hey cheonweb,

Using Iphone5 and Itunes 11.0.2.26. I ran through all your steps accordingly and I'm pretty much stuck at the last stage. I have the song I want and it's under the Tones section of my Library and listed as a ringtone (m4r file and everything). It just will not sync with my device.

I've verified under tones options of the device in Itunes that 'Sync Tones' is checked, I've tried both clicking All tones and syncing as well as just Selected tones and selecting the single tone available but neither will make the tone appear in the Tone section of the device after I drop it down or under the sound settings in the actual phone. I've also tried dragging it directly from library to device, tones from itunes library to tunes to device, but that will not work either.

Do you have any other suggestions? Thank you for your assitance, kcco.

    How long is your ringtone?

Can you sync other things like music?

    Try this:

Uncheck all ringtones in iTunes and click "sync". Wait to complete the sync process. Eject your iPhone.

Hold down the Power and Home buttons together until Apple logo appears. Release and wait to reboot. Then plug your iPhone to iTunes again, check the ringtone you want and click sync. Go to Settings>Sounds>Ringtone to see if your ringtone is there.

    Cheonweb,

I just purchased my iPhone 5 on Friday and was anxious to set up my music ring tones.

Thank you SO SO much for posting your detailed directions! It took me a couple of tries because I kept missing a step here and there. But, when followed completely it works beautifully! Super excited! I very much appreciate that you took the time and effort to post the directions as well as responding to everyone's questions!!
