Q: Harddisk not detected in xserve late 2006

Hello community,

 

I have a xserve late 2006 with 2x2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon, running under OSX 10.6.8 with two internal drives Seagate Barrcuda 80 GB in a RAID 1 array very well. Now I need to get larger drives with 2 TB. So I've got two drives Seagate Constellation ES (ST2000NM0011). Unfortunally they are not detected by the system. I also tried to slow down the drives with jumper without any success. Probably the action failed because the SATA 3 drives are not supported by the controller.

 

Now I would like to try other disks with SATA 2, i.e. Seagate Constellation ES 2TB (ST32000644NS). But if I order some more drives, I can not return them to my dealer if they are also not detected by the system.

 

So my question is: Is there anybody who knows, or got own experiences, with any 2TB drives in an Intel based xserve late 2006?

    According to this specs the Xserve you own can handle no more than a 750GB disk per bay.

     

    Default hard drive is SATA. Apple reports that this Xserve supports "any combination of SATA or SAS Apple Drive Modules: up to 2.25 TB using three 750 GB 7200 RPM SATA drive modules; or up to 900 GB using three 300 GB 15,000 RPM SAS drive modules."

    Hi Alberto,

     

    thanks for your reply. I'm a bit surprised, because Apple means 2 TB drives should work. I've found this information here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1219

    I know, old thread, but now you got them, can you tell us the original manufacturer and model number? I mean is it a seagate drive, or WD, or...?

    The drives made by Western Digital. The model number is

    WDC WD1002FBYS-43P1B0.

     

    Do you have the same problem?

    That is a 1TB drive, isn't it? As you did I was searching for 2TB Disks - but the Link you provided says since we do not have OSX 10.6.1 it would not work anyway...

     

    About a year ago we installed WD5000ABPS (500GB, SATA II). System did not recognize the disks. After degrading speed by jumper settings to SATA I they worked well - but now we need more space.

     

    I was searching for Apple Disk MB838G/A and found a photo on Ebay where you could see a Hitachi HDS721010kla330, I ordered that model, will report whether they work or not. If not, I will try your model, thanks for that information!

    I have used this Seagate drive with success in earlier model XServe's up to 2008. It is SATA II -

    Seagate Constellation ES 2 TB 7200 RPM SATA 3 GB/s 64 MB Cache 3.5-Inch Hard Drive - ST32000644NS

     

    However, when I tried the newer SATA III version of the same Constellation series, it was not recognized:

    Seagate Constellation ES 1 TB 7200RPM 6 Gb/s SATA 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch Internal Bare Drive ST1000NM0011

    Yes, our WD-drives have a capacity of 1TB. I don't really know, but maybe the firmware is modified by Apple, so it could be necessary to use the original drives.

     

    The linked page says, that 2 TB drives provided, if you have OSX 10.6.1 or higher.

     

    In fact, the WD-drives with 1 TB are working very well, an I think the drives, you ordered, should work as well.

    Well, as announced, here comes the confirmation:

    regular 1TB Hitachi HDS721010kla330 without any special Apple Firmware works well. No Jumper Settings needed.

    Hey Guys,

     

    Sorry for posting to this old Post, but wanted to see what has worked for you guys so far.

     

    I have a few XServes ( 2006 ), and need to fill them with Hard Drives. I see where you guys have gotten the following 2 types of drives to work.

     

    1.     1TB Hitachi HDS721010kla330

     

    2.     Seagate Constellation ES 2 TB 7200 RPM SATA 3 GB/s 64 MB Cache 3.5-Inch Hard Drive - ST32000644NS

     

    My questions are

    1.     Are those drives still doing okay?

    2.     Are we still limited with the 2.25 TB overall Server capacity limit or can we fill them up?
