Nov 3, 2012 2:40 AM in response to Cary Noel1by mikelee8,Nope. No reply so far and the update is still hanging in iTunes.
I have found a link to download the firmware but until I have answer from Apple, I would't risk installing it manually.

Nov 3, 2012 9:55 AM in response to mikelee8by Cary Noel1,I am unable to update the firmware by either running the installer via the App Store or by downloading and running the installer in safe-boot mode. I also attempted to boot from an external USB drive and run the installer but still had no luck. My Boot ROM Version is stuck at MBP91.00D3.B02. Furthermore, I tried to re-install (downgrade to) Lion from a DVD installer, but the installer will not allow me to downgrade. I saw on another thread here that the computer should be taken to the Apple Store. I'd prefer not to spend the time doing that, but it may be easier, in the long run. I'll post an update here, as soon as I figure out the solution. Thanks.

Nov 4, 2012 7:51 AM in response to mende1by Cary Noel1,Thanks, mende1, but I'm afraid that firmware updating works differently under Mountain Lion and/or on the 2012 MacBook Pro. The installer does its work before the restart, and there is no Firmware Updater application in the Utilities folder. Still stumped.

Mar 14, 2013 7:35 PM in response to jonwiebeby Cary Noel1,The problem is that the firmware update only works when performed from Lion. It does not work in Mountain Lion.
I was finally able to update the firmware. If I recall correctly, I did it this way:
1.) Connect an external USB (or Firewire or Thunderbolt) drive and erase the USB drive before starting. I partition the drive with one partition, click Options, and select GUID Partition Table)
2.) Shut down and remove the internal hard drive from the MBP.
3.) Connect to the internet (I connected via ethernet, but you can also connect via wifi from Recovery Mode)
4.) Start the computer with the USB drive connected. This puts you into Recovery Mode.
5.) In Recover Mode, install Lion onto the USB drive. (I believe this is the default operation.)
6.) Boot from the USB drive (this will boot into Lion.)
7.) Run the firmware update utility.
8.) Restart. Check that the firmware was updated.
9.) Shut down.
10.) Reinstall your internal hard drive and boot. You should be able to see the firmware has been updated now in Mountain Lion.

Mar 14, 2013 7:34 PM in response to Cary Noel1by jonwiebe,Wow - ok - so not a simple fix
Any idea of what the issue is?

Mar 14, 2013 7:38 PM in response to jonwiebeby Cary Noel1,It's really not that difficult. You just need the right screwdriver (#0) to remove the bottom casing and hard drive. And of course, you must have another drive of some sort that can be erased. It could actually be an interal drive.
The problem is that the firmware update only works when performed from Lion. It does not work in Mountain Lion.

Mar 14, 2013 8:54 PM in response to mikelee8by mikelee8,Apparently this thread is revieved. After posting here, I've received some calls from a previous ticket that I opened with the Support team. They couldn't find anything and mentioned to me they will check with the Engineering team. A period of time after the call, I saw a new ML update notification in AppStore and proceed to update. The issue is resolved after applying that update. There's no more new EFI update notification stuck. Hope this is worth to share.

Mar 14, 2013 9:03 PM in response to mikelee8by jonwiebe,Weird - I have Mountain Lion fully updated. But this firmware update is still hanging there. It seems to install fine and then a few weeks later it alerts me to update it again.
And not interested in opening up my computer. I guess I will deal with the annoying alert every few weeks.

Oct 15, 2013 8:39 AM in response to mikelee8by rmwlaw,I have been living with this issue with a 2012 MacBook Pro 15 inch. Have installed from AppStore as well as from file downloaded from Apple's website.
In your posting, mikelee8 stated:

Hoping that you can provide information as to the "update" you refer to, since I even tried both AppStore and the file downloaded this morning, with no success.

Oct 15, 2013 8:36 PM in response to rmwlawby mikelee8,Over time, I have performed numerous updates thought AppStore from the machine.
And one of the subsequent updates (after the failed one) manage to bring my machine updated.
After that, all other updates went through nicelay. Even the latest 10.8.5 updates are going in just nice.
In case you are still having issue and if you still have support coverage, suggest to make a call. I am not sure if Apple can tailor their updates to individual machines, thus allowing the updates to fix the issue that I had.
