It depends entirely on the phone you are using.

My research of the Bluetooth Message Access Profile indicates that iOS6.x only supports SMS from a GSM phone (typically one that uses a SIM card like AT&T). It will support MMS as well, but I have not yet tested it.

IOS 6 does not support eMail messages over Bluetooth, nor does it support SMS messaging from a CDMA network (Sorry Verizon users)

I am a Quality Assurance Engineer testing the capability and reliabilty of Bluetooth products for a wide range of commercial customers. My information is derived directly from the Bluetooth SIG.

Have a 2009 Mercedes S, and my new iphone won't work on the bluetooth in the car. Is Mercedes or Apple doing anything about this? Thanks

Why not ask them.  Nobody here will know the answer.

You're forgetting the third party in the mix here:  Your Cell carrier.  Some carriers will disable texting and other feature access via bluetooth for safety reasons.

This is about phone not texting.

Mercedes doesn't answer, nor does Apple...

Your Benz is kind of old.  Maybe it doesn't have the proper bluetooth profies installed.  Many cars need upgrades in order to work with the iPhone bluetooth profiles.  Have you contacted your dealer about an update?

Here is a list of supported profiles:

If your question regards the ability of your Mercedes to access the text messages in your phone, the most likely answer is that your vehicle's audio system does not support the Message Access Profile. This Bluetooth profile was adopted in June of 2009, which means that Mercedes Benz wasn't implementing this capability mid-year.

Your Merc simply will not be able to access those messages.

If the dealer can do an update of the Firmware, it might improve the capability. But the expense of that might outweigh the ability to gain access to your texts. This is to say that there is even an upgrade possible. This is a major addition to the Bluetooth capabilities.

FWIW, up until recently, most cars havn't had this capability. The earliest adopters were Ford and BMW.

I was having the same issue with my 2012 C-class but I finally got it working today!

Once you pair your iPhone (with the latest iOS) go to Settings > Bluetooth on your phone. Select MB Bluetooth (or however your car is listed). Make sure Show Notifications is turned ON.

Turn your phone off then back on. Next time you connect to the car, the Text Message menu item should be enabled. When a new text comes in, you should hear a beep and/or see and envelope icon on the COMAND screen. Navigate to Telephone > Text Messages and select it. Once it opens, you can select again to have it read out loud.

    Good luck!

Depends on the version of your COMAND software I'd guess.

For my 2012 C-class, this now works with the latest iPhone 5 and iOS 6. Once paired, go to Settings > Bluetooth on your iPhone and select the connection with your car (probably MB Bluetooth). Make sure Show Notifications is turned ON.  Restart your phone and it should work. I just got mine working today!

Cutting through all the chaffe here......my new Iphone 5 with ios6 will NOT even pair, nor FIND, my mercedes 2012 GLK350.  Interestingly, the car sees the phone, then pops up the "enter code" screen.  but the Phone never 'finds' or 'sees' the car, so no code is ever generated.  I've cleared my iphone 4 which worked flawlessly btw, but still no luck.  Anyone with any help (APPLE!) would be great!  Thank you

Spent a week on this problem.  Went to Mercedes.  They reset the bluetooth module in my middle glove compartment, and it worked immediately.!!  Push the blue button.

My car has a cradle for Bluetooth in the middle glove compartment.  My dealer pushed the blue lighted button, and then programmed the phone again, and it worked for me.
