iPhone 5 AT&T data usage spike (same as Verizon)

I am having the same issue with my iPhone 5. After 8 days of owning the phone I have used 75% of my data. Funny thing is when I am connected to WIFI overnight, I get hit with data usage of 10-15 mb. I know its not alot compared to other people, but the only thing I have pushed onto my phone is email. When will Apple address this issue with AT&T?

I'm having the exact same issue majority of my usage is at night when I am at home (presumably on my home wifi).

another thing that I've noticed is when I check the notifications, weather and stocks are always running, may be they are the culprits of usage? How to close them.

the home button does not show them running but when I pull the notification I see them running.

I've almost everything on off (except 4G LTE) since yesterday and still have used almost 10 mb of data (don't know how) and in terms of usage "NOTHING". the phone was locked and lying on my side table whole night.

Do we know whether or not Apple is aware of this problem? Do Apple tech folks review these discussions?

I'm making screen shots of my data usage everyday at the same time and will share #'s with Apple + AT&T after I've collected enough to support my contention that there is indeed a problem. Last night I cleared my phone of every app running in the background and woke up to a 3.5mb burn!

To those who are seeing this huge data usage, what does your iPhone report the data to be used for (upload or download)?

If it is primarily for upload, do you have your iPhone setup to backup to iCloud?

I know that the iPhone used to have a "feature" (or "bug"), where it could connect to wifi and start a large download, the drop to cellular and complete the download, even though the data transfer is too large for it to start while on cellular data. I have also noticed that unlike previous iPhone models, the iPhone 5 seems to turn off wifi when the iPhone goes into "deep sleep" even if it is connected to external power (but my iPhone 4 does not seem to have that issue).

I wonder if these people are having their iPhone start to backup to iCloud , then hitting the sleep button which causes the wifi to turn off after 10-15 minutes, and their backup finished running using cellular data, not wifi. I do not have either of my iPhones (4 or 5) using iCloud for their backup, and I am not seeing a huge spike in data usage so this seems consistent with my theory, I just don't know if there is anyone having this problem that is willing to turn-off their iCloud backup to see if the data usage spikes stop...

Most these people are having problems while at home using WiFi. Shouldn't matter, iCloud only backs up when connected to power source and connected to WiFi. That's the bug or issue at hand. iPhone should be connected to WiFi but its not, it's sucking on cellular data the whole time while your at home. People just reboot your iPhone. That's turn it off then back on.

I have been getting data usage alerts. I check my bill (ATT). It show a tremendeous amount of data being send from my iPhone between 12:00 am and 1:00am while I am asleep. I too am at home and on my wifi. I am not sure what is being sent. I just purchased a Data Usage app that will track cellular and wifi data separately. I hope to get a better idea of what is happening while I am sleeping.

I have a 4S and did not experience this problem until I upgraded to iOS6.

This happened to me today (yes I still have my iPhone 5 !!! can't return it now .. I am hosed ..)

- Went to work, turned off cellular data

- I looked, 121 mb used (since I reset the counter on the phone)

- On wifi at work, with 3 apps wanting updates, so I clicked update all

- Nothing happens, nothing is updated

- rebooted, same thing

- Went out of office, turned on cellular data and had lunch

- Back to office to discover that ALL of the apps are updated ?! (***!)

- Now cellular data count is over 300 mb

- Two of t he updates were > 50 mb, why did iOS 6 allow it ?

Is anyone from Apple reading this ??

When I called AT&T they keep say "turn off cellular while connected to wifi" it is apparent that they know something is wrong with cellular / wifi switching, and they are not admitting to it. I spoke to 3 diff rep, they all say that.

Again, AT&T blames Apple, Apple tells me to speak to AT&T and none of these people knows about the Verizon Wifi issue ..

Can this be related to iCloud backup? My iPhone 5 sent 700MB in the middle of the night (2AM) when I first got it. I can't think of anything that can send that much data unless it's backing up all the photos, etc. on the phone. Yes I know it's supposed to use wifi only, but maybe the phone is failing to turn the wifi on while backing up in sleep mode. The data usage has settled down to ~50MB a day, but that's still way too much when it's connected to wifi 90% of the time.

Meanwhile, my old iPhone 4 on iOS5 had used ~20MB of cellular data in one week.

I've turned off iCloud backup as an experiment...

Two iPhone4S's both at iOS 6. One is chewing through data to the order of 900MB every 4 days and the other is at 15 MB per day. Prior to iOS 6 upgrade both phones were at the 15 MB a day average. Have called AT&T twice and Apple twice and neither have helped.

The great feelings I have for my iPhone are rapidly waning.

Here was a little test: closed all apps except settings, connected to wifi via Apple time machine, cellular data off, reset cell data usage, forced all apps to use wifi, no iCloud. Turned on cell data and watched. Within 10 minutes, 7 KB were sent 5 KB recd. after an hour, 28 KB sent and 37 KB recd.

Please fix this Apple.

Not a single iOS app out there that allows you to track data use by app. Called Apple and asked if they knew of a way to tell me what app was the highest cellular data user - they had no answer. The rep happily told me that her Android phone had an app that could do this. Android is looking better to me every day I have to switch off my cell usage.
