    I have turned my data off (at 6:00PM EST) from yesterday and is still off and still today monring (as per my online AT&T usage) 4000 kb of data was used at 9:45 AM. Go figure???????????????????


    Who has to be blamed here AT&T and/or Apple?


    Anybody having similar issues. I've already rebooted my phone twice.

    We have the same problem with our new iPhone 5 on Verizon LTE.  Mysterious cellular data usage and lots of it when we are away from WiFi.  Turned off everything that uses cellular data.  Still tons of data going in and out. We are almost at our 8GB quota for the month.  This never was an issue on the 4S.

    I've been in correspondence with Apple since my last post.  I've had several technicians contact me about information regarding the excess data usage for my iPhone 5.  After reading everyone's post I realize I am one of the lucky ones because I have not gone over my 2gb data plan, but I have nearly doubled my typical usage of 700-900mb/month now to nearly 1.4gb/month of data usage. 


    I typically use my phone to text, facebook, instagram and emails, not much more than that so doubling my usage because I have a new phone (as AT&T assumes is the case) is a ridiculous reason considering that the phone hasn't changed "too" much from the iPhone 4.


    That said, the original technician I had been in contact with told me that another department would be handling my case and it took about a week before I heard from them this afternoon.  I was read a few scripted messages before agreeing to install two tracking programs.


    One monitors my data usage, when the phone is in sleep mode or in use, what programs are used, what data is used, when the phone is on wifi, when it is not, etc...


    The other tracks email usage, text usage (MMS, SMS and iMessage) tracking both recipient name and the amount of data was sent for all.  It also tracks when phone calls are made and when the phone is charging/synching.


    I was a little iffy with such an invasive tracking method, but whatever gets the job done I suppose.  They normally track this for 24 hours but the technician I was speaking to will not be back in the office until Tuesday which is when I am to download my tracking information and send it to him for analysis. 


    Seeing that my 30 days of ownership is tomorrow and I've already shipped my iPhone 4 away to my mother, I'm stuck with the phone regardless.  I might consider paying the extra $5 for the 3gb data plan, this really makes me wish I had the grandfathered unlimited data account like the other lines on our family plan.

    Just adding another data point that I'm experiencing this data spike as well.


    Called AT&T yesterday and the CSR I spoke with told me that at night, the iPhone loses its connection to the wireless network, so any data is sent over cellular. His solution was to manually quit all apps in the background before I go to sleep.

    When I got an email msg from AT&T, that the data usage on the iPhone was reaching the 75% level, I called them, and notified them that the phone had not been used to the extent necessary to up/download 1.6 gb of data...


    The AT&T representative put a note in my account, and stated that since I had called them before the end of the billing cycle, I would not be charged for any overages... She said just to call each month if the excess data problem continued, and I'd not be charged for excess data usage...


    I still haven't discovered the reason for the huge spike in data usage since the iphone was upgraded from a 3Gs to the 4Gs...

    This may be completely unrelated - but back when I first got my iPhone 4 here in the UK, I ran into the problem of bumping up against my monthly limit a few days after the billing cycle started. Tried everything to figure out what it was, and finally solved it by making sure the phone was visible in iTunes, right clicked on the iPhone, and selected reset warnings. That was it.


    Like I said, it could be completely unrelated, but might be worth a shot.

    I too am a low usage person.


    I was doing nothing, no surfing or anything, and I got a 65% plan used warning from AT&T

    About 3 hours later I got  90% warning.

    About 2 hours after that got 100% warning.

    Looking at AT&T logs something keeps uploading large amounts, like 66Mb in one hit


    Got billed for another increment. Already burned another 120Mb in next day or so, and haven't been doing much


    I am only reading emails and occiasion web pages. This is terrible!


    Is there an app to see what is sending all the data, so I can disable/uninstall that app ?

    After my 2nd "overage" message, I started to turn off cellular data when I am around wifi, to make sure stuff get send via wifi only, it is so annoying having to do that, turn cellular data off when I get to work, turn off when I get home.


    I am sure I've forgot to do that a few times, and guess what, yesterday I got my "you have used 100% of your overage". So as of today, 22 days in to my billing period, I've "used" 3GB over my 2GB allowence, before iPhone 5 or iOS6, I've never gone over 2gb, ever! for the 4 years I've been with AT&T ..

    Go to your phone Settings->General-Usage->Cellular Usage

    You will see how much you have uploaded since you got the phone.


    For me I see 37.8Mb send, 483Mb received


    So why when I go to AT&T does it say I have sent 320Mb in last week ?


    If this doesn't corelate with your provider like it doesn't for me, then complain to AT&T or whoever

    For what it's worth, suspecting that iCloud may have something to do with our overage, I deleted the iCloud account on our iPhone 4s (settings>iCloud>Delete Account).  I then re-created the iCloud account so that Calendars could be syncd...  (hoping to reset something in the cloud...)


    I then noticed that "Documents & Data", which had been turned OFF prior to deleting and recreating the account, was now turned ON...  Seems like there is a default setting of ON for Docs & Data...  I don't know how much cellular service is required  to save Docs & Data on iCloud...


    Turned Documents & Data back off, and am waiting to see if this helps eliminate the mystery data spike we've been getting almost every night between 9 and 10pm.

    Almost as mysteriously as it spiked, my data usage had almost returned to normal.  I'm not sure if this has anything do with it, but due to another issue I had to unsync my calendar from iCloud (Settings > iCloud > Calendar > Off) and then I chose to delete the events from my phone.  Then I turned the setting back to On and since then my usage has been about what I was using before (at least according to AT&T).

    Just spoke to AT&T and the lady was surprisingly pleasant. According to her, her manager told her:


    (1) AT&T and Apple KNOWS there is a problem with cellular and wifi switching on iPhone 5 and A LOT of people are calling in.

    (2) Even with cellular data OFF, the phone IS still using cellular (REALLY!?!?! then what have I been doing??)

    (3) Apple knows this issue and is trying to fix it

    (4) AT&T will credit me for overages, but not the whole amount.

    (5) Call back if I see overages on my next bill (I think this one is BS just to get me to hang up)


    Should I be happy? she warned me that I should watch my usage since they won't credit me the whole amount .. she asked if I am watching a lot of videos online ... >_<
