I am with Verizon and am having the same problem.  I have had an Iphone 5 for a little over 2 months and have sent 23 GB and recieved 4.8 GB!  Something is clearly wrong, as my old smart phone averaged about 2 GB a month for over 2 years.  I have called Verizon multiple times but they just tell me its because I am using Pandora and occasionally YouTube.  This billing cycle (started 1 week ago) i havent used either app and I'm already at 2.5  GBs for the month.  Any suggestions?

I was having this problem on my daughter's iPhone. The phone was also getting hot and battery was dead halfway through the day. We tried everything but deleting her iCloud account seems to have worked. Not just turning it off, or turning off back-up, but completely deleting it in settings in the phone.

I'm not sure but I don't think an email only .mac account (as hers was, a $10 per year email address added to my account) was granted an iCloud account that includes storage like my full was. Somehow her email address was entered somewhere on the iPhone as the iCloud account and I think it was constantly trying to connect, even when all options showed off.

Anyway, check out the usage difference below. I deleted her iCloud account from the phone sometime between 4 and 10 pm on the 13th. You can clearly see the usage drop.

Try deleting the iCloud account or make sure it's an actual storage iCloud account, On my iPhone, using the main iCoud account that includes storage, I don't seem to have the problem.

The recent iOS 6 upgrade appears to have solved my problem. I am slowly switching functions (notifications, etc.) back on and so far I'm happy.

Here's a copy of the feedback I sent Apple, ref this Iphone data problem...  And here's the link if you'd like to do the same:

I sent feedback previously to you to report that our iPhone 4Gs was using extraordinary amounts of cellular data, when it was not called for (not user driven).  Here's an update:

I have installed data logging software on the iPhone, and it confirms that at least 6 times this past 10 days, the phone has transmitted between 50Mb and 208Mb of data that I can't reconcile when compared to the phone's use (the latest 'squirt' of data was 208Mb).

These data transmissions occur (primarily) prior to my wife waking and using the phone.

She is not logged into any software that transmits or receives data when the phone is off/sleeping.  The only iCloud usage involves synchronizing iCal to her phone.  These synchronizations seem to take only a tiny amount of data to accomplish.

Prior to her acquiring the iPhone 4Gs, her typical data usage for the iPhone 3Gs averaged 200Mb per month.  Now we're seeing 1.7Gb of data reportedly used on our AT&T bill.

Two-thirds of this current billing cycle, she is showing approximately 800Mb of usage...  The past two billing cycles, we've received warnings from AT&T that we were approaching her 2Gb plan limit...I expect the same message this cycle.

Frankly, she is hesitant to use her phone like she'd like to, for fear that she'd exceed her 2Gb limit.  Before I attempt to upgrade to the latest iOS, I am waiting for Apple Maps to cover our area (which it does not), or for the Google Map app to come to the iTunes Store (the phone is currently using 5.1.1)... Apparently the jury is still out, as to if the latest iOS update with fix the data problem.

I probably don't need to tell you that there are a lot of frustrated customers on the Apple Discussions site looking for fixes to the iPhone 5 and iPhone 4Gs data anomalies.  We're hoping that you can field a fix soon.

I just switched (yesterday, 11/27) from a Droid Bionic on Verizon to an iPhone 5 on AT&T.  I stream music all day at work over the cell network and have for years. On Verizon, I had a longstanding and established pattern of using about 2 GB per week, around 8 GB per month, but I had a grandfathered unlmited data plan. So I factored that data usage rate in when I moved to AT&T and signed up for a 15 GB "Shared Data" plan.

My iPhone went active @ 5 PM yesterday. I have already used more than 1 GB and I am only halfway through the  first day of usage. I am streaming the same music from the same sources, no video.

I am thinking I made a big mistake in switching.  Is this a carrier issue or an iPhone issue?

You need to upgrade to 6.0.1 IOS. This will take care of your problem.

I have same problem, using cellular data even when on wifi, going through 2GB limit in two weeks. Apple already fixed it for Verizon, so why doesn't AT&T or Apple even admit that there is a problem yet? My usage did not change from iPhone 3GS to IPhone 4, but now I have ios6 of course. So is there an explanation, so that I can change my habits, shut off cellular data, or otherwise avoid unnecessary data usage, or is it just an error, in which case Apple is going to have some explaining to do?

Upgrading will not help. I am operating with 6.0.1 IOS and I am still having issues. I used to never use wifi and constantly streamed pandora. Now that I have an iPhone I rarely have cellular cut on unless necessary (don't have wifi at work) and my phone hemerages (sp?) data when it is on cellular. I used 17 gb last month where I used to use 2gb a month pre iPhone.  I get livid even thinking about it. I will most likely switch back to a droid if this issue is not fixed by apple soon.  I regret getting this thing. Too bad apple doesn't read these message boards.

I am Verizon and can tell you it is definitely not fixed.

I have had every iteration of the iPhone since the original... but I'm on my 2nd iPhone 5 (after only a month) and it has been quickly changing my mind about sticking w/ Apple for my mobile phone needs. Terrible coverage (LTE/4G) on ATT in Seattle. Flat lined signal most of the time in fact, or toggling back and forth between LTE/4G while I sit in the same spot. Data useage overages, while I'm sleeping, in a house with strong wifi & all apps shut down.

Going to try a cellular booster at home first, but if that doesn't work, I'm either switching over to Verizon (which I'm not too keen on), or I'm giving up on the iPhone5 and going to downgrade to a 4s, or worse try another phone altogether. Bummer.

  • Bob Gold Level 4 (1,370 points)

Well...sorry to say that upgrading the iPhone 4s to iOS 6.0.1 did not solve the problem...

We're still seeing between 100mb and 200mb of data randomly sent/received to the iPhone.  The app, "My Data Mgr" confirms that it's happening, and not an accounting problem at AT&T...

Time to send another bug report to Apple...

I'm having the same issue. It seems to have started after the last update that was designed to fix the iPhone 5/Verizon data usage issue. I'm on AT&T, so it seems what they fixed for Verizon they broke for AT&T customers. I shut off my Cellular Data/LTE connection a couple days ago and reset my statistics. Prior to turning the Cellular Data setting back on I verified the usage stats were still at 0. I turned it on today and was in town for a couple of hours. When I checked the usage it showed I had used nearly 2 Mb of data. I didn't even do anything with my internet, no phone, no email. My settings are such that nothing gets updated to the cloud unless I'm on wifi. What gives Apple? Seems that more firings are in order.

I wen from the 4 to the 5 and before I had I tracked my usage because switching meant losing my unlimited data To 2 gb. So with every day use it would be around 500 to 600 mb a month. I hit that in 4 days and now it's 8 days in an now at 1.4gb that is ridiculous. I did get dataman app and do see in the morning a lot going on. I can only think its iCloud but it conveniently  won't show how much it used. Upset when I had unlimited hardly any was used now that I'm on a tiered use which makes me pay more for higher use and it gobbles it up. Seems too coincidental and makes me think that they have some kind of deal to make each other more money and that is none sense.

Since Nov 28th, I've not seen any ususual (uncalled for) data movement from the iPhone 4Gs...  Anyone else noticed a decrease in data usage, or is it just an anomoly on my part...?
