    Well...seems as if I spoke too soon...  Had a 93MB hit this afternoon...


    Was about the same time that I did a Find My iPhone search from another iPhone...


    Anyone have any thoughts as to why a "Find My iPhone" search might spawn a 93 MB data up/download?

    I just got an iPhone 5. Restored it to factory settings, then restored from my older iPhone 4. A day later, it decides to do a transfer of 180MB of cellular data, while on WI-Fi. Since I have the 200MB data plan, this took all my data in one chunk. I checked every setting and the only one that had celullar data not turned off was documents. Backing up to iCloud, iTunes, etc, all showed cellular data off.The weird thing is that I was not even using the phone. It was sitting on my desk. The router indicated it was connected to the Wi-FI network during that time. I had sporadically seen this issue on iPhone 4, but never this huge chunk at one time.


    What is causing this large data consumption?

    Well, I can't figure it out... Was thinking we were "out of the woods" data-usage-wise... Started (or ended) the next billing cycle with ATT and our iPhone 4Gs decided it needed to up/download almost 200 mb of data... And, no, the phone wasn't being used...


    Another report going to Apple...


    Good grief...

    For what it's worth, here's the feedback report to Apple... Getting irritated at this problem:


    So...our AT&T iPhone 4Gs, wasn't being used on the first day on the new billing cycle...


    The iPhone wasn't being used... It had WiFi turned on... Was in my wife's pocket all evening...


    Not using iCloud for anything, other than iCal sync...


    So it decides IT needs to up/download 190Mb of cellular data, and 662Mb of Wireless data (about 160Mb of Cellular at 2045Local, and 30Mb at 2130Local, and roughly 400Mb Wifi at 2045Local, and 300Mb at 2130Local)...


    Why's it using cellular when WiFi is turned on... Why the huge data dump?  No apps requiring data were running in the background...


    Guys...this is NOT ok...

    An "interesting" note...


    My iPhone 3Gs, did it's own little "data dump" at pretty much the same time my wife's iPhone 4Gs did... The only difference was that the 3Gs dumped only 8 Mb of cellular data... Once at 2115 (7Mb), and again at 2130 (1Mb)...


    Something/someone is reaching out and touching these phones, looking for data...

    Looks like the problem continues into the new year. Bought my wife an iPhone 5 for Christmas and activated 12/26. I noticed small amounts of data being received by the phone without any particular explanation (a few KB here and there) but yesterday the phone consumed our entire 2 GB data package and then some. While my wife had a number of apps running in the background, only email and Facebook were actively receiving any feed and there is no way this amount to more than a few MB's worth of stuff. I called Verizon and while I was on the phone with them, the usage continued to climb - in fact half of the data was consumed while I was on a land line phone with the carrier and the iPhone was innocently sitting on my wife's desk, apparently doing nothing. The only way I can shut down the cellular data leak is to literally turn off cellular data completely. Not exactly sure why I got the latest and greatest smart phone when it can't be used. Another observation is that the phone reports back (once in a while) that about 1/2 of the data was tethered. This is even more strange since we don't have a tethered data plan with Verizon and even if we did, there were no devices connected to the phone as a hotspot (that we're aware of). I'd be interested in hearing if others are also still experiencing the problem or not in spite of having the latest Apple software. One very frustrated dumb phone user.

    I am experiencing the same issues. My family has had Iphones for the last few years.Since upgrading to Iphone 5's in November. We are reaching our data plan limits in less than two weeks. Our usage has not changed but our bill is getting larger each month with overage fees. both Iphones have the latest IOS available. Even while we are at home and on WIFI, it appears celluar data is being used. this is definitely a problem with the new Iphone5. We didn't have any issues managing our data usage with our older Iphones.

    Call AT&T, explain what's going on... They should remove the overage charges...(I called, before the overage actually occured, because I could see the handwriting on the overage-wall, and the rep said they'd make sure no overage charges would be applied to my account... Also, they said to continue to call each month I saw a problem developing, and they'd fix it...)

    I've had the same problem.  Since upgrading to an iPhone 5 from an iPhone 3GS on 12/25/2012, the phone used 3.2 GB of cellular data in 6 days, during which time I was mostly using WiFi and not using cellular data for movies, music, etc. The phone even used 266 MB of data at 5:30AM on 12/30 while I was asleep at home and the phone was connected to WiFi.


    I spoke to AT&T, who recommended that I reset the iPhone, restart it as a "new" iPhone for 24 hours, and then restore my personal iPhone settings.  I followed all of these steps, but it did not fix the problem.  The phone used 656 MB in 2.5 days.


    I called Apple Support about the problem and was told to turn off all push notifications. I deactivated all push notifications, including mail.  I turned cellular data back on around 11:00 am today to test this out.  I checked email a few times, opened the "My AT&T" app, and connected my Kindle to the iPhone 5 cellular hotspot for 2 minutes to download a 530 KB book.  By 1:55 pm the phone had used 121 MB of data, with all push notifications turned off.


    Apple developed a similar fix for Verizon iPhone 5 customers.  Please develop a fix for AT&T users!

    The problem we were experiancing with my daughters AT&T iPhone 5 went away when we upgraded to the latest IOS for the phone.  This was a couple months ago and no recurrance of the excessive data use.  She had gone from about 300MB/month to exceeding her 3GB plan all within about a 2 week period.  Now useage is either back to normal or close enough that she is no where near her plan limits.


    Question for those with recurring problems.  Are you backing up to iCloud?

    My Cell data plan usage has really gone up since the upgrade to iOS 5 and iOS6.


    Using version 6.0.1 now, and it seems the problem hasn't gone away.


    Have unlimited data plan but twice in the last 3 months, I got a message from ATT that I've reached 3GB. My usage habits have not changed much but now my data usage per ATT is all over the place.


    I've started resetting iPhone's cell usage statistics on the phone and it reads numbers well below what ATT is claiming. I am assuming that the hardware should be able to to capture the data usage in real time and its numbers should be accurate!


    Apple, I used to love Google and was one of their biggest fan. I used to direct my acquiantances toward their products; I don't anymore.

    I have unloaded almost everything that is Google except for the e-mail service. The reason for my change is because Google's direction and approach has shifted and has become unbearbale to me personally.


    All these years we've paid premium prices to you because we love your products; You've always said that your first motive in business was not profit but customer expeience and satisfaction. We did not mind the mistakes you've made, and we were always willing to wait for a fix.


    But not fixing this quickly and letting the carriers charge extra fees for overages, slow down our connections (even when we're not at fault) is not acceptable.


    I am getting really dissapointed with you for taking this long to address this issue.

    Please tell us if your motto has changed so we can start looking somewhere else.

    Well, I have gotten my iPhone 5 to be better behaved. It seems iTunes Match will use cellular even when on Wi-Fi. So turn that off, now we are wasting the moany we paid for that service. It is also very chatty when iCloud is involved. Everytime I look at a video, listen to a song, or read a book, it wants to send data so I can pick it up on my computer on the same spot. Turning off items  in iCloud helps, but I wish there was a way to turn this off when on cellular network.

    I am having this problem as well. My data was always less than 700 MB until the iPhone 5. In 3 days of mostly using wifi I received an overage message. AT&T told me it was Facebook and pandora, so I logged off of FB and deleted pandora and went a month with cellular data turned off. On my new cycle I waited for most of the month before turning on my data, and I had it on for 6 hours while not even using the phone more than 30 minutes of this time. No FB or streaming of any kind and it used 1.3 Gig!!! Yes, 1.3 Gig in 6 hours of which 5.5 where the phone sitting beside me.  What is strange is that all of this usage on my phone is classified as "sent", I only have 103 mb of received. Seems very strange! Apple please fix for AT&T customers! 2 months of paying for useless data plan plus an overage charge last month is not ok!

    Also, documents and data to iCloud, all push notifications, and auto updates were set to off. I do not have it set up for iTunes Match, and I made sure all my apps were off.

    We had a 100mb 'bump' right at the beginning of our cell phones latest cycle, but it's data usage has been normal for the past 29 days, or so...  Having said that, I don't trust it, and monitor it every day...


    I use a couple of apps to monitor what's going and coming to our phones, and when:


    1.  DataMan (99 cents, I believe)

    2.  My Data Mgr (free)  (This one shows a graph, day by day of your cellular, or wifi usage, and is great!)


    It will be interesting to eventually find out what's causing these data overages!
