quicktime player does not play

Question

When I click on a wav file in an email the quicktime player box opens but when I click the play arrow nothing happens. Any suggestions?

Do they not play in iTunes?

They should play in VLC:

I did get it to play when I downloaded VLC, but I can't understand why Quicktime will not work.
