Q: Persistent permissions problems.

My permissions keep getting messed up. I repair them, but when I check them again they are all a mess again. I did a virus scan and it's clean. This happens daily! Any ideas?

Also, should i update my OS? (Could that be the problem?)

Thanks!

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

First you don't need to continually repair permissions. In fact you should rarely need to do so at all.

The long list of messages is normal. Some items were changed during updates or OS upgrades and Disc Utility's database wasn't kept up to date with them.

    Here's some reading; http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448

As long as the bottom line is 'Permissions Repair Complete' you don't have any problems.

Note that DU permissions repair will not repair permissions on user data or most third-party applications.

No it isn't the problem. And if you're happy with Snow Leopard, stay there. The cost in replacing applications that will no longer run in Lion or ML, and the hassle of converting files from one format to another, plus all the new drivers for printers/scanners, etc can end up being quite expensive without bringing any significant advantages.

Thanks for your quick response. I'll stick with my current OS, then. No complaints there.

So, if I repair permissions, and then verify them immediately, it's normal to still get a long list? (Just trying to make sure I'm following.) The reason I started repairing them was because my computer was getting slow and glitchy. BUT, that was happening after I would let my battery die. I've been better about not letting that happen.

You'll get the same list every time you run it; whether Repair or Verify.

For the problem you quote, permissions repair is irrelevant. You need to verify disk, and boot from the OS install disc to repair disk if required.

As for the battery, with modern batteries it's not advisable to run them down completely if it can be avoided. It's best to recharge with about 40% to 30% remaining if you can. Obviously that's not always going to be possible, but it will improve battery life.

Very nice...Apple monderators have pulled my lst two posts on this subject  PERMISSIONS mysteries [and there are lots more in the OSX Apple-produced software /Apps and all the promises: releases / updates than just that] ...they will probably pull this one, too. Thing is:I've laready got CUPTERTINO's ear on this one.

That is not a joke. "AppleCare" is now "Apple-Careless."

Seems Apple, Inc, can't handle the seriously needed constructive critcism. Badly needed...like *in their faces.*
