Recently I purchased Mountain Lion for my iMac. It's in my purchased section and now I want to download it on my Macbook (same Apple ID), but do I need to pay for it again or can I download it for 'free' because I already paid for it?

No, that's not correct. Once you buy Mountain Lion, you can put it on all of your Macs.
You should be able to download it with the same Apple ID and use it on all the Macs you own without repurchasing it.

I thought so... (The App Store changed it's policy there other day and I didn't read it.) I was waiting for other to weigh in...
As far as I know, this has been the policy since the introduction of the App Store and Lion. I know of no changes to this policy.
Apple made a change to their iTunes and App Store policies last Sunday. This doesn't mean they changed ML license.
Here is ML license agreement as it stands now for dowmloading ML onto more than one computer that you own..
Why are you telling me this? I already provided this information to the OP.
The SLA is a bit confusing -
(a) If you buy Lion or ML from the app store, you can install it on any Mac you own or control, but.......
(b) If your Mac came with either pre-installed, then you must buy it for your other Mac(s).
On top of that, "buying" it is a bit misleading actually since the license is not transferable under (a), so you are, in effect, paying to "rent" it because you must uninstall it if you are selling or gifting the Mac.....
