Q: I got a new laptop (Macbook Pro) and my IPhone is synced with my previous laptop. I've recorded dozens of very long (un-emailable) Voice Memos over the last few weeks and need to get them from my IPhone onto my new laptop. How do I do this?

I got a new laptop (Macbook Pro) and my IPhone is synced with my previous laptop (which I no longer have). I've recorded dozens of very long (un-emailable) Voice Memos over the last few weeks and need to get them from my IPhone onto my new laptop.

How do I do this?

(when I click on the Sync option I get the warning: "Are you sure you want to sync music? All existing songs and playlists on the iPhone will be replaced with songs and playlists from your iTunes library." I fear that if I click this I will lose all of my important Voice Memos as well)

They should be either on the iPhone or in your iTunes library. If you have copied your library from the old computer to the new computer, there should be no issue. If you copied it, you would still get the warning, since it is a different device than the old computer. However, if it contains the same content, it will sync back.

To sync with your new laptop without losing data use Migration Assistant to migrate your iTunes folder (and other data) from your old computer to the new one.  If your old computer was a PC, see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4796.  If it was a Mac, see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4889.

Just to clarify, the important voice memos were recorded on my iPhone while the iPhone was not synched with the new laptop (i.e., the iPhone has never been synched with the new laptop; and the important voice memos only exist on my iPhone at the moment).

Thanks ChrisJ4203, but  the important voice memos were recorded on my iPhone while the iPhone was not synched with the new laptop (i.e., the iPhone has never been synched with the new laptop; and the important voice memos only exist on my iPhone at the moment). What do you think I should do?

If you did not make a backup of your library that you can put on the new computer, or do not have access to the old computer to do as randers4 described, I suggest looking at some 3rd party software. Google Touchcopy. I have used it on a PC, but I know it also works on a Mac. It does a good job at allowing you to copy material off the phone. You may also need to use it to reconstruct your music library.

Thanks ChrisJ4203, everything except for my voice memos have already been transfered to my new laptop. The only things I need to do is get my new voice memos (from my unsynced iPhone) onto my new laptop. Do you think I need 3rd party software? Thanks again for your help!

If you have not synced, even though you have copied the library, since you have not synced yet, you run the risk of it deleting everything from the phone. If it were me and I wanted to ensure the voice memos were saved, I would use the 3rd party software. While a sync would remove the music library, you could get it back because it is back on the phone. The voice memos are a little different because they are brought over from the phone. Your call.

Just to add to what ChrisJ4203 said.  You can sync them to your new computer using iTunes by selecting to Include Voice Memos on the Music tab of your iTunes sync settings and syncing.  However, you still need to re-establish syncing with the new computer without iTunes erasing all the iTunes media from your phone (as the warning mentioned).

If you copy your entire iTunes folder (not just your music) from your old computer to your new one, along with other non-iTunes media you may be syncing with iTunes (such as contacts, calendars and any photos synced to your phone from your old computer) by using migration assistant of following one of these methods: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527, then when you sync again with your new computer it will recognize your phone and sync as it did before.  You will still have to authorize the new computer for any Apple IDs used to purchase from the iTunes and App stores (in iTunes>Store>Authorize this computer).
After that you can sync your voice memos to your computer as mentioned earlier.

If you want to archive your voice memos before you do anything with iTunes, you can use a 3rd party program such as PhoneView or Touch Copy.

Voice memos are included in the iPhone backup. Just follow the instructions here & you'll be fine:
