continuous rainbow wheel spinning in safari

When I open Safari, the cursor becomes a rainbow wheel that continually spins while trying to load a page or type in a url ...pages will load, albiet slowly. However, the wheel keeps on turning. I have restarted my computer and this seems to have done the trick.

Recently, I downloaded a Sothink FLV player for Mac from CNET download. Would this have caused the problem?
