The problem is quite irritating as customers on PCs have problems opening the documents I send to them.
This problems exist both Mountain Lion and Lion OS. I would be really grateful, if someone could help med with this issue.

What extension is on the file when they receive it? They don't have a "TextEdit" application, so it can't be a "TextEdit" file. It may be interpretted as a Text (*.txt) file if there is no extension on the email attachment. If you know the documents you send have an extension, and the ones they receive do not, then I would think that either your ISP (email server) or theirs is stripping off the extension when it processes the email.
On your Mac, select the file you send and Get Info on it. What application is listed to open that file type?
How about the file you received from yourself via email?

Find a .doc and a .docx file in the Finder and Get Info (cmd-i).
In the Open With, make sure Word is selected and Click Change All if it is available.
You have to look at what the extension is. What it opens with or what it looks like won't help.
If you send a file without an extension to a PC user, the OS will have no idea what to do with the file.
On OS X, there is a possibility that it will recognize it without an extension, but in general, that capability has gone away.
I can't help until you can determine that you do send the file out with a .doc or a .docx extension and what extension it comes back to you as.
Why do you call it "textedit" format? What is the result on their end?
All files have to be encoded into plain text to email. The encoded text is decoded on the other side. So, there is a potential for a problem either at your end, at their end, or both.
I have no problem sending Word documents of any flavor via Mail.
When you send, try sending the email as Plain Text and set the options to always send windows friendly and add attachments to the end of messages in the Edit > Attachments menu.

It seems you are life saver. I took a document and did the "cmd i"
It showed that the default solution seemed for the system to open a file in TextEdit. I chose Word instead and have now tried to send back and forth between different servers. And right doc extentions now seem to be just right.
I am very grateful for your help. I would wish that there was somewehere in the system, where I could check that documents should open in the format that they are sent.

I guess I call it TextEdit format in lack of a better word. They receive as a TextEdit file that their windows machines can open directly. It can be opened if they drag it out on their desktop and open it from there.
When I send the mail with to myself, I receive it as a fil that opens as a TextEdit doc when I click on it. and I know I loaded iunto the mailsystem or the Gmail as a word-file.
I just checked. My mail-prgram always send as windows friendly
Do the documents you send have a .doc or a .docx extension?

It happens with both .doc and .docx
I can send pdf-files without any problems, but not the other way around. And it doesn't seem to be an issue related to Mountain Lion as it happens also with Lion OS.
I normally don't use TextEdit for anything, except I have used it recently to modify my website in Wordpress, but is about it

I don't know what the extention is. It's me guessing. When I receive (if I try sending it to myself) it comes like a file that opens as a .txt file, even though I send it as a Word-file.
It's a general problem - it seems to happen when I use Gmail either through my ordinary e-mail program Apple Mail or on Gmail's webmail.
I have a suspision that the root is that did my website in Wordpress, where you need to use TextEdit. That is the only time I have ever used TextEdit directly. the problem is where can I turn it off, so it uses the .doc or -docx format
I have just found the solution to this problem after trying to work it out for a long time.
Highlight the word file from the desktop and select command i which brings up the file info
In the file info long box go to the section that says 'open with' and make sure 'Microsoft word.app' is selected.
Before clicking change all...
go to the section in the same file info box that says 'Name & extension'
This part is important. Make sure the TITLE of the file says (yourtitle plus the .docx extension. So for example my title was Homework so I changed it to Homework.docx them click change all.
It then worked perfectly when sending through apple mail app.
