I am using the updated OS and recently lost volume. How can I get sound back?

How do I get the sound working on my iPad? It just stopped working 2 days ago. Recently, I updated to 6IOS.

Thanks, I followed the protocol you suggested. Although, it did not solve my problem immediately, it did help me to go through the process before calling for support from Apple.
