Why does my computer say not charging when I plug my charger into it?

Hi for over a month now I've been trying to figure out what is going on with my computer and why it won't charge. I plug in my charger and my computer just says not charging, so i will take it off the charger then try and try again to no avail. I have no idea what's going on but would like my computer to charge as I am a student who needs his computer for the degree I am working towards. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

what my computer says when the charger is plugged in is this:

Condition: NORMAL

Battery is not charging

Power Source: Power Adapter

I unplug the adapter and try over and over again. after about 10-15 tries of unplugging the adapter and plugging it back in it will finally start to charge my battery. That's the best i've got. It will occassionally charge (WHEN IT WANTS TO) but 90% of the time I'm running power off just the power adapter. I heard that i may have to reset something on my computer that can cause the power adapter to not function properly.

At first I thought it was my charger so I tried my girlfriend's and the same problem occured. I'm beginning to think it may either be my battery itself or something wrong with the port. I have even been plugging it into a wall outlet that has nothing else plugged into it. I honestly have no idea why this is happening. I have a 2009 MacBook Pro 13'' running OSX 10.6.8 if that helps with anything. Any suggestions?

Sometimes, an adapter will have insufficient power to manage charging. If you're sure this isn't the case, it's possible that other power devices are reducing current to your device. If possible, remove all but the charger in your wall socket, or find a less-used socket.

If you're in a bind, you can even charge from your computer's USB connection - just make sure you don't turn it off. The power must be on for the charge to happen.
