High iOS 6 Data Usage? Turn off iCloud,

For those of you with unexplained excessive data usage, I've pinpointed the problem to a bug in iCloud. Unfortunately, turning off individual iCloud services will not solve the problem, you'll have to delete the iCloud account from the phone.

Here's a video demonstrating the problem.

I hope this helps. If it solves your data usage problem, be sure to report it to Apple and spread the word.

It's likely to just magically disappear like it did the last time. Yet, we are left with larger cell bills to pay in the mean time and/or a device that cannot be used as it was intended, until things get sorted out. Personally, I bought an iPhone on day one of the original and I'm tired of paying a lot of money for something that costs me even more money than it should because it doesn't work properly. The old pen and paper routine is looking more and more attractive as well as the plain old cell phone. I'll save a heck of a lot more money in the long run and probably a lot more heachaches as well. The world at my fingertips at any given moment is looking a lot less appealing everyday. I think I am going on an iPhone diet to test the waters and see how it works out.

Just a general post to the thread. Updated to iOS6.1 and switched back on mobile data to test it. Seems to have helped a lot. Three days into test: day 1 and 2 up and down the motorway to my place of work which often really used mobile data - and in two days, less than 2 Mgs and today just at home, 80kb. So this is reduced considerably. I will let the test run.

Anyone else who contributed to this thread find that the new iOS makes a difference?

Not sure I understand OTA (over the air?) but I am pretty sure that updated when tethered to my MacBook; my prefered method for major syncs of new apps and software. I did not, as some suggest, wipe the phone and do a full new install - I just let iTunes overwrite the existing iOS. Interesting that today I used over 500 KB just in a few hours by walking around my local high street. I think the data use is somehow linked to moving between different wifi signals. When sitting in one wifi zone for a long time, there is little data usage.

So frustrating!!! Got my Daughter a new IPhone 4S. Within the first day she had blown thru 2.5GB of data. Plus most of the day she was home and connected to our Wifi. Called AT&T and they suggested turning off cellular data and having Apple run a diagnostic on the phone. Have an appointment today at the Apple store. Really annoyed.

I sent my phone data to high level tech support some months ago and what I was told was that there was nothing unusual... I was going through 1 to 3 MG per data per day whereas prior to iOS6 it was much lower. After testing for four days, my usage is lower with the new iOS more like 500 KB to 1 MG per day - put I am not using any apps knowingly off the wifi network. So still a mystery. I would like to know if you have nay luck with the diagnostic, maybe we can all learn something. I run an old 3GS.

I live in Sweden and use IOS 6.1.1 with Iphone 4s, my cell company is 3. I discovered this issue about three weeks ago when i got an sms telling me my 10 GB is running out after 3 weeks already. I can backlog 6 months and notice i´ve been around 1-1,5 GB/month earlier. My data usage suddenly rised about 673%.. of course 3 never heard of it and cant see anything wrong. Personally i guess it´s the latest 6.1.1 update causing this drain. My girlfriend got her iphone weeks after me and dont have the latest update and neither this problem. The really strange thing with my phone is that data SENT is much higher than the data recieved. Last time i checked 2,3 GB sent and 212 MB recieved, i never heard anybody got data like this. There must be a heavy bug in this one. Also when i check with 3 the data used is more than duble amount than the phone shows.

Anyone had like this?

Updated to 6.1.2 today, and fingers crossed, it seems to have solved the data problem.

After re-activating iCloud and re-syncing over wi-fi, I did the data usage test (as per video) and after 10 minutes data was 6KB sent & 1KB received. This is more than a tenfold reduction in data consumption. Still to test Google secure search on Safari, but I'm a pretty happy fella.

Hi, I'm wondering what the average data usage should be? A few months ago I got my first IPhone previously I had a Blackberry for years and never once came close to my data limit which was 750MB. My highest ever usage was 80MB.

Last month was my first bill month for the IPhone 5, a week after my bill date I was already half way through my data limit (750MB) I bought extra data to last me till the end of the month but had my mobile data switched off pretty much all the time unless I needed the internet when I was out and about... Is this normal?

I'd say I'm an average user I use my phone to browse a few websites, check Facebook a couple of times a day and maybe play on Draw something once in a blue moon. I don't watch movies or stream music at all and to my knowledge I have all the settings that effect data switched off, like location settings etc.

All this worrying about my data limit has really taken the shine off my new IPhone!

I don't know what avg use would be but it doesn't sounds like u should be using that much. Since your phone is so new I'd recommend taking it back, and back, and back again, until you get one that doesn't do that. My husband and I have iPhones that don't do that but our son's iPhone does. It's very frustrating since I am the one that pays the bill. Make sure you back your phone up on your computer before u take it back. Theoretically iCloud should have u covered on that but you can never be too safe.

I did have this problem and have fixed it - it's not iCloud, it's corrupted Safari bookmarks.I discovered my bookmark file was corrupted, it wasnt updating between computers ansd devices and I think the iPhone was constantly trying to sync with teh corrupted file. I switched off bookmatk sync on the iPhone - data leakage stopped.

I use a data manager app on tghe phone now to keep an eye on the problem and it hasn't some back.

Hope it works for you too.
