Why doesn't notes ask to "save"

I sometimes use "Notes" to actually take notes in class on my macbook pro. Recently I've lost several of these notes because I forgot to his save before I closed the window, even if I do so after several hours of the Notes window remaining open. Is there any way to set notes to autosave, or even ask me if I want to save before closing the window? I'm kind of surprised that Notes doesn't autosave by default.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

Soooo,

I discovered that I had previously set my default account to iCloud (Notes->Default Account->iCloud). When resetting this to On My Mac the notes are indeed saved before quitting. Not sure how this will effect syncing, but we'll see going forward.

Notes created as On My Mac should not be synced. That's more or less what "On My Mac" means these days.

How did you set Notes to default to On My Mac? That's not an option in my Notes application, version 1.1 (99) under OS X 10.8.2.

When I did the test earlier to verify that Notes on my Mac did autosave, my default was set to my iCloud account. It did autosave, and it did show up on my iPhone.

I did the following and now everything seems to be syncing and saving as it should.

1. Backed up all my important contacts, calendars, notes etc. on my MBP and on my iPhone. On my MBP did so by exporting various cards, from within the corresponding applications, to my docs folder. for iPhone forced backup in itunes by control clicking iPhone in menu and choosing Backup Now

2. On my MBP, went to System Preferences -> iCloud -> Sign Out. Agreed to deleting all the necessary information. Restarted.

3. Deleted icloud acct from iphone under Settings->iCloud->Delete Account. Restarted iPhone.

4. Signed back into iCloud on MBP, then iPhone. Turned on syncing for all services on each device respectively.

5. Opened Notes on MBP and ensured that Notes->Default Account was set to iCloud.

Now when I write a note, close and reopen notes, it remains there and syncs to iCloud and iPhone as it should.
