Have an iPad2 & iPhone 4 both with iOS6. I thought Messages would be the same on both platforms; but messages I write on one does not show up on the other. Any recommendations?

Use your apple ID on both devices?

Yes. Both devices.
On your iPhone-log into iMessages with your apple ID, not phone number.
Settings-messages-send & receive=apple ID
