Q: My mail wont stay deleted

so when i delete my mail from my trash/spam/junk they will delete but the second I click on another mailbox all of the messages that i just deleted start filtering back in. I have set mail back to default settings and deleted my email account and re-added it but the mail comes with it. These e-mails are from when i first got my email and since they wont delete they keep piling up! I have around 5000 emails that will not stay deleted! I have tried everything!

This was not originally a Gmail specific issue at all.  The original post was based on the fact that emails kept returning.  The Gmail part came out later.  I have exactly the same issue with my Macbook.  I have had a Windows PC for years and decided to give Mac a try.  I have NEVER EVER had a problem with email that I have deleted simply returning to my inbox. I have been having this problem for about two months now and it is extremely annoying.  My guess is the problem is not with Go Daddy or Gmail but something specific within Mac OS itself.

    My guess?

I agree. Had the problem for ages but it stopped once I had a major clear out (I had thousands of old emails from several business accounts) and has not happened since.  it started happening after I imported old emails from Entourage and started to use Mail as my only email client - with multiple accounts. Prior to this I only used it for personal emails - icloud and google accounts - and had no issue.

What happened was that I would have to clear the emails from the specific 'sub-inboxes' and also from the main 'inbox'. I would also have to delete from the specific trash boxes as well as the main trash - once everything was deleted multiple times it was sorted but took forever.

Never really got to the bottom of it but as I say, has not happened since

Hi All - i'm SURE this is Mail related/OS related as we have a Talk Talk account that comes through the Mail on our Mac and we are having exactly the same issue - hit delete, go to different mail box ('deleted items' for example) return to inbox and all the items have returned. Does anyone have a solution to this issue as it's really frustrating and we have nearly 3000 items we can't delete. As it is a common problem across email 'suppliers' there must be a common solution for everyone who has commented on this post about this issue, rather than trying to sort it through email host companies (gmail/talktalk/go daddy etc). Also it is not helpful to tell people to start new threads as everyone who has commented IS suffering the same issue and it helps to build a picture of the problem and discern that it goes across several email hosts and IS actually a Mac Mail problem specifically. More info that may help is that we have a MacBook Pro that is on Yosemite and does NOT have this problem even though the Mail is linked with exactly the same email accounts as our iMac which is also on Yosemite and IS affected with the issue. What is going on??? Any help to solve this would be much appreciated!

    thank you in advance

I have been experiencing this issue of gmail emails not staying deleted in Mail since the update to 10.10.3 several days ago. I am finding a number of threads related to this problem, and I believe the issue is with Apple. It seems they have made some changes to default mailbox behavior, specifically concerning deleted emails.

I tried this, and it seems to have worked:

    Go to Mail>Preferences>Accounts>Mailbox Behaviors

Uncheck the box "Store deleted messages on the server".

I would like to copy in a few of the other comments I have read on this issue, but, forgive me, I am new to utilizing this support community. (Don't ask me why, I have been an Apple user for years...) I keep getting lost in the threads and can't seem to find the threads I have already read/commented on...

I've had the same issue for some time. I've tried removing and re-adding the mailbox, changing purge settings and rebuilding. But still after a few seconds thousands of gmails come pouring back in. Any other advise?  This is beyond frustrating.
