How do you put ovals around pictures?

I'm using AW 6.2.9 on an iBook 800, G3.

I'd like to place ovals around pictures in a brochure but can't seem to figure out a way to do that. In other words, the picture is inside of an oval and everything around it is white.

Suggestions?

What you're looking for is an oval shaped mask, and AppleWorks has no built in capability for making one. The problem is that AppleWorks does not do graphic objects with transparent 'holes', so any mask must be made of two or more objects with the transparent area in a concave space between them. Fiddly at best, and difficult at worst.

First draw an oval, lock it. Using the Bezier tool, starting at about center of one side, roughly trace that oval, one point on each side. But when you meet the other end don't connect, go straight out sideways and make a rectangle around it all, finishing by coming back to the oval right on that line to complete the shape. Hold Option key to get sharp corners, hold Shift to get vert or horizontal lines. Go back and adjust the bezier handles to improve oval.

You only have to do this once in your life. The shape can be scaled and duplicated.

Well, how do you get your photos into your computer? If you're using a program that came with your camera? Try it. Some have frames as optional edits. I can do it also with the editing programs that came with my printer. Epson gives several options including the oval vignette. Check into Arc Soft, I don't know if it's free for everyone, or only with the printer. I use their Photo Impression 5 to do most of my fancy edits. I'm a newbie with ideas and their stuff has room to play in. If you get that far, then copy the oval framed pic to your desktop and insert or open in A/W. Then more stuff possible.

Hi,
In order to ovalize the photo do the following:

1. Create and the select the oval.
2. Select either the Pattern palette via the Toolbox menu or the Pattern's Tab on Accents menu.
2. Click on the first button which has two white boxes. This allows you to see through the oval.
3. To cover the corners you can expand the line width and color it using the pen palette.

Hopes this helps.
