imovie wont open in edit mode

I am using iMovie 9 and have created a movie about an hour long. I was editing it and then the beach ball of death appeared and kept spinning. Now when I try to open that movie to edit it the ball comes up and I have to force quite. I have noticed that the file is about 6GB in size but comparable length movies are only 100MB. Is there any way to open the movie in some other application to find out if there is any corrupted part that can be removed?
