I bought a new ipod touch 3rd generation 32gb in the spring of 2010. Since then I've been able to update all the way to iOS5.1.1 but no further. Why can I not upgrade to the most recent version(6.0)? Around the 2011/2012 new year I purchaced a second iPod, this one a 4th gen 64gb for the camera feature and extended memory space. This iPod was able to upgrade wirelessly to iOS6.0.

Because the hardware on the 3G iPod is not good enough to support iOS 6.
So Apple is designing software that is incompatable with hardware they developed only a few years ago. I also do not see how the iPod 3rd generation platform cannot run iOS6. The two devices have the same graphics engine and a similar cpu clock rate to my understanding(833mhz and 1ghz). Besides, the 6.0 upgrade does not require that much in a rise of idle CPU time. I'm probably not the only iPod touch 3rd generastion user that is willing to sacrafice a little preformance for a higher operating system.
That is progress. The 4G iPod runds iOS 6 marginially as it it. the 3G would be worse. An iOS device with a dual core processor works much better
So the new iOS 6.0 is practically designed around the iPhone 4s and greater models. This basically tells me that apple either needs to decrease the useless bells and whistles, or develop an operating system that is compatable with the majority of their products. Apple is just dropping the ball. Again.

Software always moves faster than hardware. My Touch 4 runs iOS6, but honestly the device hasn't run great since iOS4, which is what it came with. My iPad2 probably won't be eliglble for iOS7. Just like I have macs at work that can only run 10.6, and PC's that are still running XP because we know if we put Win 7 on them it'll brick them because the operating system will put more demands on the system than that system can handle.
Yes, I am going to be writing a letter or email of some sort. Apple is letting their customers down. My school has about 500 6 year old laptops running an intel atom 1.2ghz and someone put windows 7 on them. The proformance drop was significant but the upgrade was worth it. If someone were to look at this like I do, we can see that apple is messing something up with their operating systems because the iphone 4s has the power to run Windows 7. Something is really fishy and I siuspect it is another way for Apple to try and get more money (like the iPhone 5 charging port) by everybody having to buy more of their products to keep up with their OSs.
Oddly enough i have friends running 5.1.1 on the 1st and 2nd generation iTouches rather then the so-called 4.1.2 limit...

Perhaps you should ask them:
a.) how they've managed it? (We know already, you don't need to post back to tell us. See below.)
b.) has the Touch become unreliable after this miracle feat?
...because iOS 3.1.3 is the latest version the 1st gen Touch can use and iOS 4.2.1 is the latest version the 2nd gen Touch can use.

None of us knew about the limit until recently(the release of 6.0 more or less) and we practically shun all jailbreakers, even an apple representative at BestBuy who recomended jailbreaking the iPad2 I just walked away from, because it is not right, morally speaking. They just did what they always did and updated to the most recent version via iTunes on their own computers which has always been buggy to start with. At one point i had to reset everything Apple related to get my iTouches and nano's to sync with iTunes. My friend with the first generation bought it when it first came out and my second friend and I didn't follow suit until early (his, it might be a 3rd gen but he purchased it new off ebay as a 2nd gen to save money) and late (mine) 2010.
My 3rd Gen 32gb almost never crashes unless I come back to a high performance game from the lock screen, once every week or so, my second friends (2nd gen 8gb) crashes occasionally, 1-2 times a day, and my first friends 1st gen 8gb crashes very frequently on simple apps that require internet access, 10-15 times a day.
My first friend with the 1st gen finally had it with his and got a new 4th gen 32gb.
Other then a bug with iTunes, I have no other explanation.

If you have that much insight to the technology involved, perhaps you should design and produce your own incredibly sophisticted handheld device in competition with Apple. Then we'll see who wins.
You appear to be intent on putting your own point rather than seeking answers to the question you posed; Why can my ipod touch 3rd gen not upgrade to 6.0?
That has been explained to you, but I'll expand on it.
Technology has improved so fast and by so much that older the iPod Touch models cannot install iOS 6 because they are not capable of running it correctly, or at all. You are the very person asking for improvements, but as soon as they arrive, you don't want them because those improvements are beyond the capabilities of your model.
