I updated my iPhone 4 to iOS 6 and now cannot make or receive phone calls.  They automatically are sent to my voicemail.  When I try to return the phone call, it says "call failed."  I have powered my phone off and back on.  I also have full battery and full reception.

Can anyone help?

Tap Settings App > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. See if iPhone makes calls. If still problem, Restore iPhone Firmware on computer with iTunes.

Tried the reset network settings, and restore. Still having problems. Phone shows 3 to 4 bars of service. Any other thoughts? Or is this an iOS 6 bug?

I have exactly the same problem. I upgraded my iphone 4 to ios 6 and intermittently can no longer text or make calls. I have restored the phone, reset network settings, restored as a new phone - all with the same problem. Yesterday I had an Apple Genius appointment and they did a DNS store - it seemed to work ok for a few hours and then stopped working again. I'm pretty sure this is an ios6 bug as my phone had no problems till the day I did the update.

One point - the problem is much worse when I have my wireless on at home or work, i.e. I can no longer ever text or make calls when wirelss is on, even when phone set to 3G only. However, if I switch modem off then phone works better but still not all the time. Very confusing, even the Apple guys weren't sure why it's happening. Can anyone else help???

Contact your carrier to troubleshoot network issues.

Really?  They performed a Domain Name Service (DNS) restore?  haha... hopefully you simply mistyped that.

Your experience does not imply or confirm a bug... it simply confirms you've failed to contact your carrier to troubleshoot network issues.

    HI there,

    sorry that was a miss-spelling!

I did contact my carrier, and I have the same carrier for my work mobile which has no issues - any other ideas? There are a large number of users it seems who are experiencing the same thing since the update.

There are a large number of users that experience issues after every iOS update... that does not mean the update caused the issue.

There is an even larger number of users that never experience any issues and as such never post here.

Try removing and reinserting the SIM.

    Try replacing the SIM.

Contact the carrier to troubleshoot their network and your account with them.

Many thanks for the suggestions – I should have been clearer in what I have tried

    • I have a 2-year old iPhone 4. Never had any problems until the day I did the ios6 update
    • I contacted my carrier 3 who investigated and said there was no problem at their end. They suggested I contact Apple.
    • My work mobile is also on 3, and works from home when my iphone does not
    • 2 colleagues have newer iphones on 3 (4s and 5), and both worked when mine did not
    • After your suggestion above, I just tried one of their SIM cards in my phone - my phone did not work
    • I have removed and replaced my SIM card
    • I have reset network settings
    • I have reset Do not Disturb settings after seeing this elsewhere in the forum
    • I have restored from both my laptop and icloud
    • I have restored as a new phone
    • I have had an Apple Genius appointment. They restored ios6 on the phone in a different way as they said it was possible that there may have been an issue with my original download.
    • They also took my phone apart to inspect it
    • They also suggested it could be linked to wifi as they said a large number of users had reported many different wifi issues in their Glasgow store since the update. They suggested this as I had told them my phone never works for calls/messages anymore from home (although internet is fine). To test this they connected my phone to their wireless and it did not work. This is before they restored.
    • I tested their theory at home and I managed to get my phone working when I switched my modem off
    • However, there have also been periods of time where the phone won’t work when I am on 3G

Sorry for the essay but if anyone has any suggestions, I’d be really grateful.

I 100% admit that it may not be an ios 6 issue – it may just be a coincidence that the problem started on the day of the update. Regardless, a phone that only works for calls and texts some of the time is pretty useless. Help :0)

Based on the above, it sounds like a hardware issue that needs to be addressed rather than an iOS issue.  Yes, it is extremely coincidental the timing... and while it's possible it is iOS6, it's more likely that it is hardware related.

Maybe it's time to upgrade to a 5.

Thanks for taking the time to respond on this one, much appreciated!

I have another Genius appointment tomorrow - if they can't fix it, an upgrade it may have to be - maybe I can blag a discount

I have also an iphone 4, did an update to ios6 two days ago and ever since I have my telephone connection failing: I cannot receive or make calls, I cannot send SMS or receive them, but I still have the 4 bars indicating a connection is made to my provider. This has never happened before the update. If I ask it to change provider to a different one and then come back to my provider the connection works again (i.e. I can make and receive calls).
So I am not sure the theory of a  hardware problem coincidental to the update but rather a bug in ios6, maybe only visible in iphone 4.

If anyone has a solution, I will be happy to hear it !

    Hi there,

I am still trying to figure out this problem, whether is software or hardware, but had to reschedule my Genius appointment till today! In the meantime, I have a temporary solution which works in my case. If I switch cellular data (i.e. 3G) OFF then wait for 10 minutes, my phone starts working again. Sometimes I have to switch wifi off too but most of the time it works alongside wifi as long as cellular data off.

Not a long term solution but works if you need to quickly make a call. Give it a bash and see if it works for you. If my Apple visit today results in a more permanent solution I will post it!!!

These are the exact problems I have been having for weeks ("since the update"). I have had multiple calls between my carrier (AT&T) and Apple to resolve. So far I have done every restart/restore/reset there is, had 2 replacement sim cards and Apple had shipped me a new phone. Nothing has resolved the problem. Called Apple back today after having new phone for a week with no changes in service (iPhone 4),  They are shrugging their shoulders saying they don't know what the issue is. They told me I can return the phone....again, or find a store to go to. While I had my old phone in use waiting for a replacement (Blackberry), it was having no connection problems in the same locations.

I am experiencing exactly same problems in Manchester

iPhone working perfectly downloaded ios6 and now getting no service on phone and texts

This fault is intermittent but phone is down most if the time. Don't believe in coincidences must be related to iOS 6
