The Apple Genius asked me that as well but I did not. In fact, I hadn't ever heard of it until he mentioned it.

Literally hours? It's the etc. that I am curious about. Have you tried OS X Recovery? How long does that take to start up? From there have you ran Disk Utility then Repair Disk (not permissions)? Have you tried starting up in Safe Mode? etc.

Did Disk Utility/Repair Disk find any problems?

A useful thing to look at would be your system.log via Console (Utilities folder). This will keep track of various system messages during startup. Maybe there will be a clue there.

I have the exact same problem. yesterday i had to restart my macbook pro, which is a dreaded action since I found out earlier that it also takes hours to reboot (after it's done booting there's no problem with the machine, works the way it should). But yesterday was worse than ever. I restarted at 1 PM and left the office frustrated at 7PM, the macbook still hadn't finished booting. I closed the lid and went home. This morning I opened it up and the macbook showed me the login screen! I have owned about a dozen macs since 1995, and I have never had such a problem before. I tried everything GoodDougBoston did, but to no avail.
