Go to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key and choose Library. Then go to Preferences folder and trash this file:

com.apple.finder.plist

Then, restart, or log out and in again.

(You may have to reset a few finder prefs the way you like them.)

Thanks, Macjack. You're brilliant and I'm stupid; I'd forgotten it's so often a preference file that's at fault. I've had this problem for a few weeks and not managed to find time to look for solutions until today and yours was the only one that worked. So I have now put in an order for David Pogue's Lion: The Missing Manual. I'm figuring it's time I stopped being stupid and learned more about Lion! :-)

Oddly enough, Tom, I find I'm having the same problem. Even command-shift doesn't work for me. Since most of my programs have keybaord shortcuts to open (or switch) to them (courtesy Keyboard Maestro) I've had to stop worrying about it--and maybe get to creating some shortcuts for the software that still doesn't have them!

I was having the same issue on Mountain Lion, Command-Tab was not working when switching apps and I had to click on the Dock to actually switch to the app.

The issue was resolved by going into System Preferences | Mission Control and selecting the checkbox for When switching to an application, switch to a space with open windows for the application.
